Out of File Space for Graphics

Post by larry cottrill »

Out of file space for more pictures? (How can this be? ;-)

When I try to post the final construction shots for Henri, I get a message that my file space for 'all' attachments is used up. What do I need to do?

Hmm....6 pages of uploaded files man : oD Anyway, you have webspace, try uploading your images and linking to them from there using the

Code: Select all

tags?

Each user on the forum Larry has an allowance for disk space and yours I assume is used up;-(

Well, I guess you should go back through the old stuff and do a spring cleaning.

Ben wrote:Don't delete anything yet. You have used 500mb of space, but a bit ineffectively.

For example, this file:
http://www.pulse-jets.com/phpbb2/files/ ... ne_203.jpg

It's over 200k as a JPEG, but if you converted it to a PNG or GIF it would likely be below 20k. Line art shouldn't ever be saved as a JPG, especially not one bit line art.

I can convert some of the files and e-mail them to you, if you'd like to delete and re-upload some of them
Ben -

Thanks for the tip! I KNEW there was some reason I used to use PNGs for this, but I had forgotten why this was.

Not necessary for you to do anything - I can easily handle the conversions myself. From what you're saying, it sounds like starting out replacing just a few of the most recent drawings would buy back a lot. We'll see ...

NO, WAIT ...

The problem is, the board doesn't let me edit my posts that are over a few days old, even though the permission schedule at the bottom says that I can!

What's up with this? I seem to be stuck in monster graphics limbo ...

I couldn't upload pictures either, the same error message occurs while I was doing so.

A little speculation is that I think the total limit of file space is reached, not for individual.

"Sorry, but the maximum filesize for all Attachments is reached. Please contact the Board Administrator if you have questions."

I've emailed Tom and Kenneth. This is way bad.

There are free picture-holding sites on the Web. Perhaps the old images might be trasfered to such a site to liberate space. Instread of images, the 'old' part of the forum would then have links. Could be a hassle, however. I don't think such sides facilitate batch upload. Links would have to be put in manually... We're in trouble.

I've hit my limit too it says. But fear not, I can still link if nothing else. ha
It all started for me when Viv and Larry asked me to blow up a picture of a Chinese valveless, so I think they are to blame. I'm not a moderator, but I think they should be banned for causing problems.

Yes, actually, much of it IS my fault, for my stupid use of JPG format for my many recent B&W drawings. Ben was so right ... normally, JPG offers really good compression, but for true monochrome images the reverse is true - the penalty for using JPGs is HUGE!

I will be glad to replace all my recent JPG drawings with much-smaller GIF images, but to do it I have to be able to edit posts more than a couple of days old! We used to be able to do that, but I guess that changed after the slash-and-burn tactics of certain former participants who will remain nameless. Give me a way to edit old posts, and I can start giving back some space!

Of course, that doesn't solve the larger problem which Bruno is talking about, but it would at least free things up for a little while.

I think it would be fun to have section where all the pictures could be stored and viewed according to catagory. It's hard to hunt them down the way it is now. And too, we could have a top 100 photos site.
Would it help if we all started designing smaller pulsejets?

There's been several photos and drawing posted several times. I'll see if I can get Kenneth to give Larry the permissions he needs, or better yet suspend the ban on edits so everyone can do a little houskeeping. I like the ban. I really hate the idea that someone can go off the deep end and thrash the threads.

Well, I see Kenneth has been testing something today by posting little images. Maybe he's already working on fixing the problem.
