I made a heat shield for the combustor today, the wooden seat won´t stand the radiant heat so had to shield it somehow so it won´t catch fire during the run.

Before I called it an evening I made a portable coffee machine.

The very cold weather is giving me serious problems with starting, I know from GRIM that the engine is rock solid and can honk out even more than the specified thrust so the problem is the cold temps here. I am discussing this with M and we have agreed on a somewhat major makeover for winter conditions. The name of the experimental T3 engine is BLixT (lightning in swedish).

The coffee boiler reminded me of my piglet snorkeler I ran the other day with the tennis ball caught in the updrafts. This 4 inch gazing ball would be fun to try with your coffee boiler setup. I wonder too if you could put a couple of exhaust holes in the sphere and angle them to make a spinning Hero's steam engine floating on the exhaust of your engine, boiling some water inside the sphere. I think it would be visually stimulating. ha

Could you not heat the tank up with a propane torch like you did before? I tried it to - works like a charm. Even with only 1/4th of the tank full I had more then enough pressure to start the M40.

Mark: Interesting idea with the tennis ball, I have to try that one next time I run it!

Metiz: It might work but it would still be unreliable, and I can´t have an unreliable engine at race day.

The tube you noticed is a starting sleeve, an experimental insertable tailpipe that was designed for easy starting. It worked well as you can see but the engine won´t continue running when the sleeve is removed.

The engine is apart now for further modifications.



The old intakes became a funny hat, I tried it on my friend and it looked fabulous on him!

I have all the drawings for the next step in the Thunderchine cold weather developement, a single intake engine with more of the Chinese looks to it than the previous designs.

As soon as possible I will start building it, we got a little girl yesterday morning so from now on I won´t have time (or will) to be in the workshop as much as I have been before. Don´t worry though, I will have it running before the race in 26 march. =)

Thanks a lot guys, she´s the most adorable little girl. Now I have the interesting task of subtly introducing her to jet engine building and motorcycles without overdoing it so she gets tired of it and starts to fancy horses or buys instead...
