I built a coilgun once, or actually I built about 10 of them. Once I got it all figured out just right I had a 2 stage gun that would drive a 1" nail up to the head in a piece of plywood from 15 feet. Of course it was kind of silly seeing as how it worked off of 600v pulsed from 6 gigantic capacitors, took nearly 2 min. between shots to charge from a car battery! It was still cool though.
