A noisy idea

Post by Psignorian »

You know, seeing how pulsejets can be tuned to produce pitches if one knows what one is doing, I'm surprised a clever person hasn't rigged together a bunch of them to be the world's loudest organ. I'm sure it would be interesting if someone figured out how to feed fuel at the right points.
"Ow! It's hot!" "Just get away from it, it's dangerous until it cools." "I hope she doesn't notice what it did to her plants..."

Someone had a similar idea, but that was a propane fueled fire organ. It's somewhere in the off topic, take a peak.

I've been toying with this idea a for a long time. The main problem is getting an engine design that will start instantaneously, every time you hit it with a gust of air. Sustaining operation is not necessary, and probably not even desirable! Instant stopping is also necessary, but we all know that pulsejets of any kind take that requirement esaily in stride.

It might be best to have pipes that are always warmed up, running at rest in 'blowtorch' mode with upward convection through vertical pipes. Then, a blast of air would kick the pipe 'over the edge' into force-fed pulsation. You would also want a design that holds its frequency over a range of temps, but we seem to have gotten that with the low-impedance intake designs.

It has to be quick switching - if you can't do the Widor Tocatta from his Organ Symphony or Bach's Tocatta and Fugue in D Minor, it's not worth the trouble of building it.
