new posts feature back to frontpage

Post by metiz » Thu Jun 12, 2008 11:07 pm

Don't know if it is still in the works but is there any way the "new post" feature could go back to the frontpage? first logging in and then checking posts is kinda cumbersome.

the feature that was on the old front page, before the new format and forum change. You could see the latest post right there (last 10 or so) it's a lot easier then first going to the forum, logging in and clicking on new posts.

Sorry, couldn't make it work again. Kenneth did everything with databases, and things were so convoluted we couldn't save that bit.

Ok no worries

One more thing though. The picture on the frontpage does not load realy fast. this is probably becuase the source pic is big and some html code scales it down to fit there. This takes a couple of seconds. Most people use 1/20 of a second to rate a webpage and might be deterred by this.

I don't want to sound like a whiner but you will lose some visitors by this. It can easily be fixed though. just scale the picture down to the required size in paint or something. You probably do not even have to change any of the code on the frontpage - it just becomes redundant.

This picture does indeed load slowly, and across a wide range of browsers, but not for the reason that you cited.

You could have easily checked from within your browser to see that the source image is a 45 kB (8 bit) *.gif file.
I supplied the original source file to Mike some time ago (...its "parent" image was copied from a web site  ).

In any event, Mike cropped the image I provided to its current size, one to one (1:1) with the displayed image.
The problem looks to be in the css or other code provided by the phpBB templating system; and YES, it's SLOW.

It would be nice if this image could be loaded FIRST. That would help, me thinks. :?:

I don't know if I understand you correctly but this http://pulse-jets.com/mike%20e%20and%20lockwood.JPG is the source pic used; a big-ass jpg file wich is being cropped by code. If you you (or who ever) just scaled that pic to something smaller, you could ditch the cropping code making it load faster would it not?

Hello again!

Wowow... I SEE WHAT YOU MEAN! And here I thought that the little *.gif at the top of this page loaded slowly!

You were (and are) talking about the SITE main page, and I was talking about the FORUM main page. So sorry!
I almost never (never ever) visit the site main page, so I assumed you were talking about the forum. So sorry!

I will reduce the image then email it to Mike asap, but we have to wait for Mike to upload it to the web server.
It may take another week or so as Mike is presently on vacation; until then, the site main page will load slowly.

Thanks for clarifying things (...and for your patience!).

Cheers!

And here it is...

Post by milisavljevic » Wed Jul 02, 2008 7:09 am

Here's my "scaled down and touched up" version (320x240). At only 39 kB, it should load really FAST!
mike_and_lockwood.jpg
I'd swear that was Bill Hinote's thrust stand (and trailer) in the photograph. Bill?
We still have to wait on Mike to upload the smaller image to the server...Mike?

Enjoy!

Sharp eye there, M!

That's the original version of the stand, which hung from vertical uprights. I didn't feel the strength of the verticals was adequate for the purpose and modified the whole thing substantially into a contained "trolley" running on 3 tracks. It was capable of dealing with as much as 100 lbf thrust, I believe. The most I ever exposed it to was 28 though.

I think that I've seen a photo or two of the new thrust stand. Precise, repeatable and portable. Good combination!

I hear that you may have moved on from pulsejets? If not, I'm sure that I can cook up a nice, phat 100 lber for you!
Maybe a wicked QD avec u-bend or a ginormous superchine? If the latter, I think that twinning it is the way to go.

Cheers,
M.

And no..."twinning" is not the same thing as "pairing"!

M.:

Aahh--there was a time when I might have been tempted--but no more.

I'm older, and crustier too (just ask one of my 6 grandchildren!).

I stopped along the way and created a really nice-running gas turbine project, converting a turbocharger from a diesel truck (it's for sale, BTW--anybody interested?). There's several clips of this project on Youtube, too.

I'm on to greener pursuits these days. So much to learn........and so little time. I'm only going to live to 200--and that's about HALF what I need to satisfy all my curiosities.

No worries! It cost me nothing to make the offer; OTOH, if you had taken me up on it?

Good luck with your projects, sir. :D

Btw., no need to "hide" while online; you have no enemies here.
