Mapping cones?

Post by loco » Sun Mar 18, 2007 12:03 pm

Hi, I'm having a little trouble figuring out the mapping of a cone onto sheet metal. I've seen some basic instructions on one website, but I'm not 100% sure on it.

For example, using the plans have handy, I need to make a cone with the dimesnsions of the atached image. How do I figure the angle and chord of the pattern?

Thanks in advance.

Hey, its not hard at all to manualy draw up your cones, i used to do it this way untill i was shown the cone calc in use.
Now, hell, i couldnt be bothered NOT using it.

Heres the link from this site for it.

Have fun.
Apparently, dont print off in inches, i havnt tried it, but it messes it up.
Just make the cone in your preffered unit, then hit the mm switch before you print.

Get the pulse jet calculator, its an excel based program which points out all the angles and measures when you type in the inlet and outlet dia and the length.

download is here: http://www.pulse-jets.com/count/pulse.php?ID=41
Trust me, I know what I´m doing... o_O

Fantastic! What an awesome tool! Would the 'cone length' dimension be the 50mm dimension on my design above?
Also, did you say it could print out the actual pattern? I can't seem to figure that out.

thanks guys.

Yep, prints it right out ready for the scisors. Stick it on your steel, or trace around and its spot on.

Yes, the cone length is the hight parallel to axis.
The angle can be handy too, although most cones we need are right cones which of course are 0 deg.
If it doesnt fit on one page (which doesnt take a very big cone) it will tell you, just agree and it will sort it out.

Cone Mapping

Rossco-

Though I've heard of this program, I've never, ever tried it. Just now, at your recommendation, I downloaded it and gave it a test run. I will NEVER lay out cones without this, ever again! What a simple, easy-to-use, wonderful tool!

This would have been a joy to have for my 'Smooth Lady' project, where the chamber cone had to joint the tailpipe at an angle. For those who don't remember what this was, see:

Thank you, sir!

also another program i use is called conecreator this also plots your design in dwg format so if you have a friend like mine who owns a lazer cutter he can load it in to the lazer cuters pc and cut your metal within minutes

i WILL get this pulsjet running even if my wife says i wont
