I wonder if you could make a bottomless jumping jam jar using this Edison Horn shape that might lift off the ground just a little bit to exhasut and inhale and it might also exhaust/breathe some out the pointy end of some diameter? There might a way to suspend a tank of fuel of some sort in the cone.
Certainly on a flat surface a bottomless jam jar of some weight might skitter/hovercraft around as long as you fed it fuel and it had a hole in the top to breath in and out.

I wonder if you could design a typical jam jar cylinder with a very light, low friction free piston in the bottom and a typical 1/5 diameter hole in the top for jam jarring? Then it would be neat if the piston would have the response time to amplify or play along with your jam jar action going up and down somewhat with the air pressures. Perhaps a small design would have a good chance of working.
Just some sleeves/food for thought/variations on a theme links below. You would have to hack off a lot of piston and lathe it to get the weight down I should think. Perhaps if you had a stirling engine ultra light valve/piston, that would work on a very small scale. It would be fun to watch a free piston fly back and forth in a quartz cylinder too, something like my feather-light copper caps previously posted perhaps.

I built a jar last night that had a (Laminar Flow engine type) regenerator tube on the bottom end. Used SS scrubbers as a regenerator. It runs, but weakly.

I was hoping the regenerator would reinforce the high low cycles. So far it is the opposite, almost muffled. There is probably something in error, regenerator not packed tight, wrong size pipe, wrong length pipe. I will post a picture in the Odd Metal Jar post tommorrow.

Those fast moving caps came to mind while I was putting it together. Ha

Pressure swings are probably to low.

Would it jam jar/snorkel with a small pool of methanol in the bottom to feed upon if held upright?

Maybe it would be fun to put a simple reed valve on a jam jar device, in hopes of ramping up the amplitude. And perhaps you could get a longer or wider shape/aspect ratio to run. http://tinyurl.com/5e86p6

Like the price of gasoline, the price keeps going up. ha
Actually, $31.67 each is still cheaper than you could buy it from a company. One of these days I'm going to make something unique out of mine. Oh!

Looks like Germany is paying quite a bit.
"Record prices on the international oil markets have driven gas prices across Europe sky high, with a gallon of unleaded gas costing about $8.60 per gallon in Germany. (In Germany, gas is sold by the liter with one liter of unleaded fuel selling for an average of $2.29)"

Here's a blatantly boring condenser perhaps, but there might be something useful in a pulsejet or jam jar that utilizes a central tube/core either for cooling or for heating of the fuel or both. Or for some additional air supply or even as some other form following function.

The other day Eric mentioned ---
"Working more on heating and power generating systems now than propulsion engines. Propulsion is a pretty limited market but heat and power is a little bit bigger."

But I think toys or an artistic slant might be the greater market. Remember that one valveless SNECMA pulsejet they let fly around the room tethered, it almost looked alive trying to find an escape route in the ceiling, if you used your imagination. I'd like to see a little spindly jam jar with snorkels redirected downward, angled out so that the mass was self-correcting for stability. How fun would that be, a little craft that could be very light and lift off the ground and hover about, whilst not being deafening. Or something that plays with color and light and flame; the gas organ that PyroJoe posted fits the bill too. It was interesting to watch how the flames were backed/buffeted down below the torch nozzle sometimes. The sounds of course were nice too. ha
I wonder if they used Pyrex tubing or sprang for the more expensive quartz? I have a Pyrex tube 2.5 inches in diameter 4 feet long that I use as a howler tube. It has a copper Brillo pad in it to create the tone; once the torch is removed the tone starts up about 4 seconds later. In winter it is pretty loud and flying saucer sounding if you rock in/angle it off the verticle. I've done some howling with my meter long quartz tubing too, but I just need to get around to playing more. I wish I could be an artist or inventor doing this stuff.

Imagine conveniently pipetting 25ml into a small jam jar using one of these, the exact amount for a perfect run perhaps.
"Repetitive pipetting has never felt or smelt so good!"

And how confusing that would be if you were using these fuel additives. ha

"It hit a house and broke a picture window in the living room and the kitchen window on the other side and crashed in a 15 acre Dolomite pond. Never found it but I can still hear it running. Cost me almost four hundred bucks for the windows and I still go nuts when I hear a pulse jet run."
