Incredibly simple in concept and I think that a hobbist could build one if not for the g-forces involved in spinning a wheel whose rim is moving 2000 feet/s (thousands of G for a large disk, 10's of thousands for a small disk).

I actually had a similar idea and thought better of it when I calculated the forces involved -- had to do the calculation several times since I was unable to believe the values I was getting.

Thanks for posting this. I found it about a year ago, and couldn't for the life of me remember where. Very thought provoking. they talk a lot about the high compression per stage compared to axial fans, but little about how much air is being moved for the diameter. I think it's very little.
