Any pics & vid of Pulse Jet powered R/C aircraft?

Post by John Bauman »

Greetings,
I'm new to the forum but have been interested in pulse jets since I first read about the VI Buzz Bomb when I was a kid.

I fly R/C aircraft (mostly electric) and would like to see what others have done with their pulse jets. So if you have any pics or videos of your work in action please post them here.

I would like to build a pulse jet powered model, around 60" span.
There are three other guys I work with that are interested this project. One is an engineer, one is a machinest and all around great fabricator and I'm in electronics and instrumentation. We should be able to build and fly something respectible, I hope.

Horace,
I didn't relize the Double Whammy was a pulse jet or should I say double pulse jet powered plane. Now that I watch the video again I can hear both engines. Thanks.

John,
How long is that pulsejet and what kind of valving does it have? If you can find out, there are several people on this forum who would probably like to know more about it.

It's been built by Dewey King, one of the kings of modelmaking IMHO.

See his stuff at http://oak.cats.ohiou.edu/~kingd1/.

sorry to open the chinese intake debate again but have a look at the intake were it joins the combustion chamber on his valveless engine link:-)

Hi friends!
Yes..... A beautiful collection for this person!
Soon... Very soon I shall be freed, and then I shall begin manufacturing of the engine!
I already have returned in activity (CNC) manufacturing of a valving grating from qualitative duralumin.
Diameter of the engine 90 mm (is 3,54 in.s!) my neighbours will be hung up. It is necessary by him{*it*} to say: " dear neighbours, it is time to you to go to purchase in Shops - rope to be hung! " - (it is a joke)
Nice collection he's made!
And I shall do it!

To me, it appears that the transition goes from a circular section where it joins the straight pipe to an oval section of the same width but almost double length where it joins the cone. So, it would be a moderate diffuser during aspiration, and a moderate nozzle in ejection.

I also note that it appears to be a good model of the classic plan - the tail tube appears to be precisely the same diameter as the chamber. This doesn't guarantee that the intake transition is what was originally intended, however!

Any disagreement from other observers? To view it properly, I had to heighten the gamma of the jpeg and zoom in on the area in question.

My thoughts exactly Larry, I think we will just have to build a few and run them up on a test stand and do a comparison to put this one to bed!

The classsic plan as you say when correctly interpreted has the complex cone joining the combustion chamber, but I for one did not spot it untill Luc started to draw it and pointed it out to me, I would have built it the same as this one.

We now have differant engines built to the same plan, this is one of the things we want to sort out with the pulse jet plans restoration project, these old plans are far from good in a lot of resects.

Mark,
I was just sent the pic but no other info. I asked my buddy where he got it but he couldn't remember.
Bruno seems to know almost everyone and everything about pulse jets. Thanks for the link Bruno.

Since I'm new at this pulse jet thing I will use this thread to post pics of pulse jet powered R/C aircraft I come across. Many of you will be familiar with these but they might be new to some, especially us new guys and help stimulate interest.

Here's a take off from Bruce's design, the T-Whammy.
