Spare thrust for airliners in case of emergency

Probably you've all seen yesterday's plane crash in Holland. Some say it was due to total engine failure.
Here is where my fantasies start, would't it be great if planes had back-up pulse- or pressure jet's for in case of engine failure?
With just enough thrust to keep the plane in the air or in a slower descend, light weight and minimum maintanance?
Which amount of thrust would be needed for this? (forget about the 747 and A360)
Can the jet's be started in flight?
Anyone having numbers or ideas?
