It is curious that the comments in the article refer almost exclusively to the bicycle, dangerous etc , did nobody see this photo ? According to the article he really did this

That's the standard pulse jet flightworthiness test. It is usually strapped to the back though. Assisted with rollerskate landing gear. A ramp is normally used for those who can't afford the airplane jump.
