Since you have "proven" that the Reynst and Lockwood are merely transmogrifications of the same beast, why not build one?

Gary Robinson is a good builder, for sure. So, are you betting against it? I have the Hinote Criteria on my side, and I'm not sure Gary was blessed with that, though he has an awfully good eye. The proportions wouldn't have to be off by much, though, to keep it from catching hold.

I'm not exactly sure where to fuel it - maybe Rosscoesque, with a spray ring right upstream from where the intake air spouts in? Or, more Steve style, with a ring just inside the flare?

I have a Loch Ness Scottish design, (Scotland is said to be the only country where the ( ) couldn't make a living, (choose your ethnicity). The Scots are known for penny-pinching. Anyway, a very inexpensive valveless design could be made of very cheap plumbing pipe with a single washer sandwiched inbetween the front bell housing and combustion chamber segment. Then you could thread in a front intake snorkel flush with the washer providing a reflective front barrier/wall very similar to the recent valveless designs that are being presented.

Yeah, someone's got to do it. I posted one like it a while ago, and have probably sketched variants 20 times. I think the main problem will be getting the intake area right, and keeping it there.

then there's the LH variant that we've been toying with.

All are going to be dimension sensitive. Try some numbers, intake areas change wildly with little tolerance.

I think with our new "understanding" of length proportions, we can get there.

Well, all those are nice of course, but for Mike's proof engine, I just wanted something that really has that Lockwood "look and feel", but with Reynst breathing.

Let me clear up something about Gary Robinson's Big Black Beast. He and I never had the benefit of the insight into the necessary geometry that you now have. We both thought that the inner end of the exhaust pipe should be fairly close to the chamber bottom.

If we were doing it today, I'd tell Gary to position the tailpipe exactly as you have drawn it.

Also, Gary had other things to attend to, so he only did a few unsuccessful tests before abandoning the project.

I can't remember the fueling system anymore. Maybe it was also less than conducive to success, but I don't think so. Gary always built great fueling gear.

To me it looks to have too much gap between the exhaust pipe and the combustion chamber, letting all the compression escape prematurely.

If you can publish even a crude drawing that shows the exact dimensions, we can design one that YOU can built out of it ;-)

As you can imagine, the final result will be about 3x as long as the piece you have there. You would need to be able to put a decent flare around the rim that's at the bottom in your picture, and weld a plate across the rim at the top [unless maybe it's already closed off?].
