Re: Steam rocket project
Hey Anders
I was watching a Mythbusters episode last night about exploding water heaters and I must admit I did think of you
Here's one for your enjoyment http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmJoyuUJj2Q but there are plenty more they did about these things

Yes, I noticed that our website (mobackenracing.se) have started to get many visits from some dutch video site. Too bad that most of them won´t understand what we write since it is in swedish...metiz wrote:Just stumbled on to your rocket kick clip on one of the biggest video hosting sites in the Netherlands, frontpage - http://www.dumpert.nl/mediabase/789951/ ... _kick.html

That water heater episode is awsome, that slow motion video of the heater going through the roof made the hair on my arms stand up...

Re: Steam rocket project
They mentioned us in Swedish television today, according to them it is the "Worlds Fastest Kick" but I don´t know about that...

Re: Steam rocket project
We are as surprised as you are, this was just a fun thing to try while waiting for some parts for our "real" jet kicks and it became such a stir about it. Two weeks from now we are most likely going to participate in a motorised kick race arranged by a motor club in Falun, they have an unlimited class that might work for us. it will be great fun and we should have a fair chance of winning the event if we manage to bring enough firewood to last all day.metiz wrote:Haha this keeps getting richer and richer!

Re: Steam rocket project
Nice propeller-kick you have built, how much thrust did it produce? Welcome to the forum by the way!
I was heard on national radio today, for you lucky enough to understand the swedish language here is a link to the radio show. We have also been contacted by a member of Robert Aschbergs (famous shotgun-reporter in Sweden) tv-show but we have decided to turn that offer down, things are getting out of proportion and we are losing valuable workshop time.

Re: Steam rocket project
Thanks.
Sorry for getting a bit off topic here, a moderator can edit this, should he find it necessary.
The prop kick generated around 200N - that's an approximate based on figures we measured from the rc-planes, on which the engines were formerly attaced.
The three motor combination was never measured as a whole.
We do have some new plans for our classic kick-sled - a Simpson-design Lockwood-Hiller is in welding stage at the moment and we hope to get the first flames out of it quite soon.
I'll post the progress on a more appropriate thread.
It surely seems that great minds think alike

Hello Johansson,
Your rocket is really great, i'm amazed by this.
i was thinking in what point the reaction from all that thust going?
the cone section? Can the tubbing survive if you go all way up to 100bar? or did you fixed the nose to the structure? (if it is the reaction point)
(EDIT: Hey is this your kick? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8w476L9 ... re=related)
I find some oxygen tanks, they are a lot more cheaper than i thinked (used ones up to 150L)
someone knows if every tank designed for oxygen is made of inox steel?
Thinking on putting one of this things to my bike. or my car hehe 150L gone give a lots of impulse (just kidding)
A oxygen tank a T conection and some tubbing to go to pressure sensor, a Ballvalve, and the nose, the heater, is anything missing?
Anyway congrats, hope you continue developping this!

Re: Steam rocket project
Thanks!
The kick in the video link is not make by us, they really don´t know what they are playing with. It looks like an aluminum N2O bottle and that is so stupid that I cannot find words for it...
After some summer tests we found that the side of the steel bottle was bulging out and could have bursted during the last run, so we have decided to retire the steam rocket and settle for "safe" gas turbines instead. It is great fun but not worth dying for.
Cheers!
