Simple No-weld Pulsejets!! Or are they?

Post by newbieflyer » Wed Jun 10, 2009 1:16 am

Hi there,
I designed 2 pulsejets, I'm asking whether they would work. If they work, please tell me which one, if any, works good. I'm on Project Titania, which would eventually power a manned cart. I'm aiming for the speed of a bicycle.

A: The Mug Jet
Simplicity: Moderate
Weld?: No
Time to make: a week
Materials: Same as "Maggie Muggs" plus a large cap

The Mug Jet is based on the "Maggie Muggs" design. Instead of being a ramjet, The Mug Jet is a valveless pulsejet. A large cap would be put in front of the intake. A struss would be used to support the cap, ensuring that the cap wouldn't block the air. For the spark plug, a pyrotechnic fuse would be used. The fuse would insert into one of the holes in the flameholder.

B: TSPITW
Simplicity: Absurdly Easy
Weld?: No
Time to make: 2 days
Materials:
1. Long thermo-serve mug with non-constant inner radius
2. Electric driller
3. Small basket sink strainer
4. Slightly larger basket sink strainer
5. Propane/Butane
6. Silicone tubing
7. Copper tube
8. Fireproof glue
9. Long pyrotechnic fuse
10. ALTECO (R) or "502" superglue

Instructions:
1: Drill eight holes on a side of the mug. Get them as symmetric as possible.
2: Tuck the small sink strainer in until you can't push it anymore.
3: (If the strainer is too near to the bottom, try the larger one)
4: Superglue the strainer to the mug.
5: Drill a hole for the copper tube.
6: Insert the copper tube until it reaches in to about 1/3 of the entire radius.
7: Superglue the tube.
8: Fit the silicone tupe around the copper tube.
9: Superglue it too.
10: Connect the other end of the tubing to the propane tank.
Final Step: RE-GLUE EVERYTHING USING THE FIREPROOF GLUE!!!!!! Failing to do so would result in an EXPLOSION!!!!!

Starting the engine:
1: Insert the long fuse into one of the holes.
2: Light the fuse.
3: Run to the propane tank.
4: Precisely when the fuse burns to 5 cm away from the hole, turn the propane on.
5: The engine will start to run.
6: Adjust the fuel flow to get an ORANGE FLAME that is roughly conical.
7: Close the propane.

Precautions:
1: If the flame blows out, CLOSE THE PROPANE.
2: Though the optimal flame is purple with shock diamonds, this jet can't stand the temperatures. Run this jet rich!
3: Flames shooting out of the holes is NORMAL.
4: If the strainer flies out, SHUT DOWN THE ENGINE!
5: To stop the engine in an emergency, use a fire extinguisher to blow into the holes.
6: If the flames go out all in the holes and the holes look like zippo lighters, try shaking the engine to stimulate pulsation.

Thanks a teraton,

Have you thought about threaded plumping pipe parts etc?
Just a thought.

Um...... Yah.....

After reading your initial post I think I would have to agree with Jutte;

You might want to look in the plans section under Pipewood. Quoted and edited here for simplicity.
"PIPEWOOD" (weldless pipe-fitting engine)
Plans:
download.php?id=7231
Development and first run:
viewto%20...%20sc&start=0
Another successfull Pipewood build:
viewto%20...%2055&start=0
Also the safety thread should be read ; viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4950
In the process of moving, from the glorified phone booth we had to the house we have.

No real time to work on jets, more space, no time.

Life still complicated.

Now just vote for other designs:

A for Pipewood
B for Maggie Muggs with some sort of recuperator
C for "No-Weld Pulsejet" http://www.aardvark.co.nz/pjet/noweld.shtml

you can definitely get the pipewood to work, for lack of welding.

As to your design instructions, just some random notes:
Pulsejets cannot explode, they are more likely to collapse.
"fireproof glue" is half the problem of joining two things that will get red hot. thermal expansion makes glues fail, even if they could take the heat. Super glue will never, ever, ever work on anything that takes heat.
the strainer in the maggie muggs is a diffuser necessary for a ram-jet. you must have a high speed leaf blower for this motor to run. I do not think that motor has run or survived the first stages of running. Larry Cotrill would have to correct me here. My memory is baaaaad.

"flyer", you need to do a lot more reading here. Spend some quality time reading Bruno's paper, then some other threads. Look around at random. You can learn a lot!
Mike Often wrong, never unsure.

Here's a clip of a pipe"something" that I made last year from cast fittings. No welding. It howls.
