These are a couple of thermal images, compared to normal digital photos.

As part of the preventive maintenance program, they hired in a specialist to take some photos of the electrical installation,

Hell, next time he comes, there’s going to be a couple of “noisy surprises” for him to photograph,

You could probably do the same yourself using a hacked webcam or digital camera. CCD capture chips are *extremely* sensitive in the IR range, generally digital cameras have an ir-blocking filter in place. Lots of people have hacked webcams to do IR by removing the IR filter and replacing it with a visible light filter, for pulsejets you might need a partial IR filter as well. Might be worth a shot with *just* a visible light filter (a bit of black leader from processed photos would probably do) in place and no other hardware hacking.

it wouldent work to use a webcam, it is sensitive to IR light in the lower IR spectrum but not to heat, heat is in the high IR spectrum and you could probably never modify a webcam to see heat unless you replaced the CCD.

I've used Mil grade Night Sight Equipment for similar uses.Not exactly thermal but can give you an idea
of what you're dealing with.If the unit gets overloaded use an mil grade infra red filter to compenstate.
Don't ask... it was another life almost a lifetime ago.

My company builds about 50 thermal camera platforms a week for FLIR Systems. so I've definitely got plans to look at a PJ with one!

I've used an Olympus C2100UZ with an IR filter for taking IR images. It's extremely sensitive in the IR spectrum (it's considered by some to be the holy grail of cheap digital IR photography), so I can shoot handheld without trouble.

However, it's still near IR, just outside the visible, and it's not very good at taking thermal images. I've tried to shoot an open flame, and the flame on the photo wasn't any bigger than the visible flame.

Heres 3 pics of a Chinese style combustor with a straight tailpipe ,
One is in the back yard , one is running at twilight , the third is the same image , but I just played around with the hue, contrast and saturation controls , , though not real thermal images ,an interesting effect.
