Ka 56 is one of the most interesting small helicopters ever. Kamov is a hugely experienced and capable helicopter developer, so that I have no doubt that the little machine would have been an excellent flyer. Unfortunately, they could not procure a suitable engine at the time and the thing never flew.

Today, such engines are available. For instance, the German Aixro rotary engine, which develops up to 80 HP in a very small package -- about the size of the engine 'can' shown on the Kamov prototype -- would fit the bill and doesn't cost a fortune -- some $ 5,000.- the last time I looked.

Mate it to the Russian helicopter, which would also be cheap by Western standards, and you'd have a sensational little machine probably costing under $ 20,000 retail. For a factory-built helicopter, this would be sensational. And would fit in the back of your small truck, too, or on the roof of your car.
