KJ-66 model build project

Post by Rossco » Mon Feb 26, 2007 9:29 am

Hi everyone,
This is my latest project in an increasing inventory of engines.
Forrest has inspired me to get something more up here, so this is a good one to start with.

I want to do this one as a public build. Please get your comments in here.
There is bits and pieces missing from the multiple copies of plans i have and other parts are either missing or are different from one another.
Its very frustrating not to have a clear layout or good info.

If someone builds this or has already built one, i will do a full plan set for them to use as they wish, in exchange for the info of getting this model just right in a well running config. I will including the renderings, drawings and info presented as a package.
So, this is your chance to talk out the best way to do it. It can even digress to our own build. If something isnt going to work from a construction point, give me some ideas of what would!

Ill drop some images in now, they are just a random collection of some i have done on it sofar.

Sounds like a plan, Rossco ... I believe a good one, too.

I like your small in file size, but distinct pics of your drawings. ;-)

Sweet!

Another piece to the puzzle

Post by Rossco » Tue Feb 27, 2007 12:38 am

Phew, this one took a bit.
I will start on dimensioned engineering drawings soon, for you to compare build to any info you have.

Can someone please suggest the correct term/name for these parts. Im making them up as i go.
They are called different things from one plan to the next, and one of them is in German! (i only speak bad English)

I like the design of the diffuser with the 15/30 staggered blade setup - it is actually something I was considering to do with my current diffuser which only has 15 blades - unfortunately with too large a seperation angle with so few. Cutting slots and welding in a second set of 15 in that staggered layout would actually put the blade seperation angle right at 12^ which is more in-line with where it should be.

Great images, BTW :)

Piece of the puzzle

Post by Irvine.J » Tue Feb 27, 2007 5:46 am

Lookin good rosco, all I need now is a robot that can simply take that model, and I can say DO IT, and the robot will flawlessly cut it all for me. Sweet picture though. Look foward to seeing your final plans / setup you come up with. Very pretty.

OK, i spoke to soon Forrest,

The flame tube is proving to be a pain in the ass. The flanging of the holes outward is causing me no end of trouble.
Looks like i have to make them in parts, inner and outer, stick them together in a sub assembly, then align them in the holes of the rolled steel.... what a pain for over 70 holes! I just dont know if the program is going to handle that many repititions?

There must be another way! Ill go back to it tomorrow.

Flame Tube

Post by Rossco » Thu Mar 01, 2007 11:01 pm

Still working on this flame tube......grrrrr

I have not had a lot of time to put into it yet, although im not getting far on the current track.

My problem is that i can only work in flat planes. What i have is a flat cross section rotated to form the shape, in the case of the flanged "part" to be placed into the hole, this is "cut" from another shape representing the tubular body.

On a hole punched in, like the one i did as an example for Forrest, its not a problem, because you have material to cut into. On this one, im left with a gap, that i am twisting my head off trying to create a tool to make a filler for!
Pics attached, inside... ok, outside GAP (between flat and curved profile)

In reality, this would be produced flat, and then rolled, correct?
The form of the hole would then be distorted and streched horizontaly to accomodate the curve... how to tell my computer to do that!???

I think i shall put this one asside for a while.
What part next?
I suppose i should throw the body together to put some of these parts in...

OH, the big one. Does anyone have any drawings or pictures of the compressor and/or turbine wheel? I will need these very soon, and am looking foward to the challenge of that compressor!

Maybe???

Post by Rossco » Thu Mar 01, 2007 11:04 pm

I might have it!, just as i was posting the above. Ill try now.

Dont hold your breath!

And yes, i just noticed the mistake in the raised lip bend for the welding tag... i know you wanted to point it out!

Ok, another little bit done tonight on the KJ-66.

I still have not achieved the desired affect for the flame tube, so i moved on, although this has really taken the fun out of it. I need to solve it first before any more!

Hey Guys! Whats with the quiet forum, wake up!
I am still looking for any comments on the design here, as well as some, any, info on the turbine or compressor. Any compressor will do for now, i just need some detail on them. I have started twiddleing with some made up ones, although there is a real science in them that is obviously not there in mine! ha. Im researching, although its a hard slog for any usefull drawings or relivant info.
The turbine i could approximate from the drawings, although what blade angle, and curve? I only have a sectioned view.

I hope someone is enjoying the pics... ill start to get some assembly happening soon, to see if that sparks some interest, and more improtantly some feedback info.

Nice! Don´t worry about the lack of comments, they will pour in as soon as you start to post "real" pics of the engine!

Here is a bit of a play with the compressor wheel.

Needs some small blades yet.

Oops, forgot a part.

I much prefer the look and construction involved in no. 2.
What are the comparative benifets of operation?

Wow that thing looks cool!
Makes it nice n easy to see everything on the layout, cant wait for the plans to come out.

Now its not looking so easy to see!

I had the "hot stator" blades on the wrong way! doh...
Fixed this, so that it directs the flow to the turbine, and the turbine turns the compressor the correct direction.

Also fixed an error or inconsistancy in the plans for the turbine hole and mounting point on the shaft.
One says 8mm dia for the full 21mm length, although im missing the part to lock the turbine in the right possition on the shaft. So im going for the other that says 10mm of 7mm dia (and changed the hub dia of the turbine) to mount it against the 11mm of 8mm section.... i think...

Looks like its working out so far. Ill have to wait for the next interferance to happen before finalising this.

Very hard to see in this shot, although what do you think of the stator to turbine angle? I just roughly matched up stator out to turbine in. The turbine blades are sheer guess for now, curve, angle and number!

The stator is sitting aproximately where it will end up... it seems a long way off the turbine!??

Too many questions.
