butane as a fuel??

Post by freediver1990 » Thu Jun 29, 2006 11:39 am

hi,

is there any reason why butane cylinders for one of those small camp stoves wouldnt work to power a small dynajet sized puslejet?? considering theyre only 2 bucks a can in Australia its not bad value...and if you buy the stove that goes with the cans, you get all the fittings included...just seemed like a feasable idea to me?? ive got no idea how quickly it would go through fuel though...obviously it would depend upon how well the jet was made as well as alot of other parameters..any feedback would be great,

thanks,

Daniel

freediver -

There is no reason butane can't be used. The difficulty will be its very low vapor pressure - especially as the cylinder chills during use. In a "wintertime" operating environment, butane would be almost useless. But, you probably don't have much of winter operating conditions in (most of) Australia. I for one would very much like to see someone run a pulsejet successfully on butane to show that it really can be done.

Larry,

thanks for the quick reply-its always good to see experienced people readily help out the newbies in a forum. As for our, winter-you're right, our winter this year is particularly mild, and the maximum will generally be about 22 C...so it shouldnt be too bad...

Here's a graph of vapor pressure vs temperature for propane and butane:

... and some interesting observations around the post.
