Turning BBcode OFF and HTML ON in order to enhance posts

Post by WebPilot » Sat Aug 27, 2005 11:04 pm

When posting, if you look in the lower left hand corner,

HTML is OFF
BBCode is ON
Smilies are OFF

So, the enhancement is apparently there; all someone in charge has
to do is turn it on. Smilies were turned OFF.

I have been to wikis where you have this option: you can use either
one. So, you don't have to use HTML if you prefer to use BBCode.

Why would I want to do this?

In HTML mode, one can enhance his/her posts. You can incorporate
tables, and/or mathematical symbols, fractions, greek symbols,
superscripts, subscripts, and much, much more.

Most of you who have written your own web pages in the past know
that BBCode is a mere subset of the commands available to you in HTML.

Having HTML on is also a way of letting hackers have an easy time!

Hi Viv,

I am sorry to read this, but I am surprised patches for this haven't been written by now and are continually being updated. This isn't the only PHP server in the world.

If the Internet in general feared hackers, I suspect there would not be many servers left on it.

Fight back! Don't cower!

General advice I see from running my own board is to turn HTML off, yes they keep updating with security fixes (one last month) but its genearally after a hole has been found:-)

Also it can be a pain to update a board that is moded, I killed mine badly once with a simple slip up:-) also the PHP mods some times break the version of mod used, this is an even bigger pain, I run two boards one for the public and a second one just for testing stuff before I apply it to the main board.

Its a case of limiting things, if you can and use the Kiss principle were ever you can.

No News on that paper yet by the way, slow! thats librarys for you:-)
