Emu

Post by Mark » Tue Jul 26, 2005 1:31 am

Has anyone any experience of being around an emu or how they behave? My sister has one that has taken up residence on her ranch in Texas, (arrived out of the blue), and feeds it daily. What's to know about an emu I wonder? She says it sits down sometimes when it eats.

Emu feathers are quite valuable in the fashion industry and the roasted meat tastes great (had some at an exotic food fair once). Other than that, I know nothing else of the emu.
Trig IS fun.

I know of two farms near me that raise them, so they are hardy birds that can be bred and domesticated.

I had an emu dish some 5 years ago in Sydney Australia. It tasted good. :)

Hello- The cousins up in Mt. Pleasent (Charleston, S.C.) have Ostriches.
The small herd is wild. One is eighty years of age. They were brought here when feathered plumes were all the rage on womens hats. I made the mistake of tickling one of their feet. (Massive brogans you would not want to connect with you in anger.) Now they're all doing it.
