The fuel mixture bounces of the front bulkhead and compresses the charge even more, so it is cooler right at the front, than insant heat follows, than
down stream fresh fuel/air mixture charge enters at intake, cooling down the
area, so its darker again. After that compression occurs again as it is forced to the lot smaller area, ful inferno develops and whole charge exits and new cycle starts.
