My latest failure. These little jars are ~3.25 inches tall or ~8.5 cm, anyway they don't seem to want to run. They are kind of spherical shaped. I was wondering if I tried an off center hole if that would work. Might it be the length to width ratio causing the problem, it's about 1 to 1? Or is it the convex walls more so? Or both?
They have a typical small canning jar lid. I saw several lids at this store, they have a lot of lid designs and patterns these days, for all your jam jar needs. If these had run, I could have used some grape scent in my methanol, the stuff they sell to aromatize methanol race cars. Nothing says macho man more than a grape scented fuel I think. See the link for groovy grape. But it might be fun to confuse your audience and use some lemon lightning with a groovy grape lid. Although these little jars don't work, I can at least use the lids on my other jars.

Now, that really IS fascinating. Seems to me to be one of those "amazing facts" that only one in a million people has ever heard of.

One interesting thing about this is that the charged steam from a high-pressure nozzle would constitute and electric current, since it represents charge in motion. If this were not steady, like say the intermittent exhaust from using the steam to drive pistons [IF the charge still exists at that point], it could theoretically be picked up by a specially designed coil via electromagnetic induction - a "vapor state magneto".

What do you think the chances are that, at some point, combustion gases are electrically split like this? Perhaps what we need is a metal chamber and fused quartz tailpipe with a pickup electrode behind the exhaust port. Maybe what would be easier would be a metal Reynst Pot with a quartz chimney. Or, we might be even luckier and get a potential difference between the outer shell and the inner "cone"!!! Maybe all these years we've just been shorting out a lot of great "potential" ...

I've tried the exact same jar without success. Now I just use it to hold my methanol.

Yes, there are many more things I could try with the baseball size/shaped jars, fuel as you say might be one of them. They really fire all their hot gases quite quickly, maybe they are just flaming out, maybe I could slow the combustion down a bit or rethink the exhaust/intake hole.

Thanks for that Steve, I'll keep a lookout for any jumbos for you too. Speaking of which, the Autolite 1095 spark plug is the most interesting spark plug I have come across lately, I think you would like the "large" deep hollow cavity, the center electrode hardly takes up any of the space. I wonder what the philosophy is there? It would make for a good combustion chamber for you expertise small designs. That way your spark plug would really be prominent. ; )

I'd like to have an ignition system this small, as small as this flashlight, not much larger than the battery and perhaps lasting for 3 minutes or so. The smallest I have is that EMCO 10,000 volt device that I can rubberband a 9 volt battery to it's back. The high voltage unit is not much larger than the battery, but could be made smaller I'm sure. EMCO's device is .85 inches thick, 2.5 inches long, and 1.5 inches wide.
