I know for a fact that aluminum and HCl releases HCL gas, just try it. Drop some Al in some HCL, let it get bubbling, stick your head over the bucket, take a big whiff, and then tell me that it is hydrogen gas. Of course you will have to wait until your lungs heal and you are able to speak again.

Often when you, say mix aluminum and NaOH, it makes a lot of heat, and heat can tend to evaporate some of the NaOH as well as the fizzing. It will produce a choking odor. I suspect heating concentrated HCl would do the same. It kind of smokes all by itself when you take the cap off the bottle.

You are leaving the H2O out of the reaction

I should say hydrochloric acid is really HCL gas dissolved in water. It seems a good bet some of it, HCl gas, is escaping in the mist.

Mark, you said you could buy Methanol at WALMART. Under what name does it go by, and how much does it cost, for what quantity?

If you want a hydrogen powered rocket, by electrolysis no less, you need look no further than Estes.

It's about 70% HCL and 30% steam. I know this from previous HAZMAT experience. It is the common method used by meth cooks to produce anhydrous HCl to convert their product from its freebase form to its HCL derivitave.

"Magnesium only reacts with methanol if the water content of the methanol is below 1%. Try drying it with anhydrous K2CO3 or better CaO or even better CaC2."
I found this on some chemistry forum.

This is a very easy way to get hidrogen. Al+NaOH+H2O=>NaAlO2+H2
try to put NaOH, pieses of jar cover(or other Al pieses) and H2O in a beer can.You will get a steem and H2.
