Help with fuses
Or is it spelled fuze?
No thats the terrible tasting water crap my mom drinks...well back to my question.
I am having trouble making fuses, I got the dextrose i got the black powder and i got the string (and hot water too). I tried the method here: http://www.pyrouniverse.com/fusemaking/blackmatch.htm
yes it does work, but not super well.
Does anyone have a better method, or preferably one that doesnt take days to dry!!
And the thinner I can make the fuse the better, my final project will go towards tiny rockets and bottle rockets, so the smaller the better.

Sailing Student- How do I know if my life jacket is tight enough?
Me- Can you breathe?
Sailing Student- Yes
Me- Then its too loose!

Roll a cotton string in Rcandy while its still hot-n-gooey.
For electric ignition I have used X-mas tree bulbs with success. break the tip off the bulb (careful not to break the filament) and fill the bulb with black powder. Then install into your rocket engine. I have a radio controlled ignitor I made from parts of a cheapo RC car from wal-mart. Use the reciever end as a relay to send the juice from a 9-volt to the bulb. It works suprisingly well, and the chips from the car fit into 2"x4" project boxes from radio shack.

re: Help with fuses
I like the performance of the rolled rcandy, but I cant seem to get it small enough...
I kinda sorta got a working fuse. It is a black match, but made with much thinner slurry. Then i put it in the oven at 200 degrees for an hour or so, it comes out bone dry, then I break of the little pieces and just use the black string...seems to work but I cannot say it is infallible...
A long long time ago I met a man who paid me 50 bux to mount some stuff on his r/c plane...yeah you guessed it, it was a missle...
I designed a little holder that wont release the rocket until it has enough force behind it, so once it was up to pressure it flew off. He told me it worked but I never saw it run...
r/c ignition brought that up it wasn't random

re: Help with fuses
Ok this isn't working...
It goes out once it loses outside air, does anyone have a good recipe for a fuse that I can make small (around 1/8 inch diameter).....
I can fill the core with bp and hope that the fuse get it lit but...

re: Help with fuses
just use electric ignition...its safer and more reliable.

re: Help with fuses
It's kind of a tight fit...I have made electric igniters work but I am still in the motor testing phase so a regular fuse is cheaper and easier...but since its not working I guess its not...
I did use the rolled up rcandy for a long time but the nozzle throat is just smaller than I can roll the stuff.
I willl continue to experiment with diffferent combos, the next one I'm going to try is 1 tsp kno3 in a boiling 1 tblspoon of water, soak the string in that until all the water is gone, then use the regular fuse method...I think I'm just not getting enough oxidizer inside the string...

re: Help with fuses
DANGER!!!
I saw people take the pull pop things apart and use that to start gunpowder inside the rocket motor...anyone else see a problem with this!?!?

re: Help with fuses
just having to secure your engine firm enough to pull the popper.
x-mas bulbs are cheap and easy! why worry with fuse? stand 40' away with a 9 volt battery and 40' of cheepo speaker wire. grab a string of christmas tree bulbs from the closet, add a little bp, or pyrodex, or whatever and presto.

Fine ill do it...
For the smaller rockets though...the bulb wont fit through the nozzle, will this cause an issue?
The nozzle has an 1/8 inch throat...

re: Help with fuses
Just gently stick the broken tip of the bulb into the nozzle material, with the bulb covering the nozzle exit. It get knocked off when the engine starts.

re: Help with fuses
uhh ok lemme think...
This is a metal nozzle I lathed...convergent divergent...so there may need to be some bp placed between the ingiter and the propellant to make up for the slight space that is there...
Or I can move back to cement nozzles whilst I wait for my new lathe to arrive (within the next 6-8 weeks hopefully)

re: Help with fuses
You can buy electric rocket ignitors and an ignishion control thingy from HobbyTown USA

re: Help with fuses
Its been a while since I posted in this fuse thing. Still cant make a good fuse, BUT I grabbed 2 large 12 volt batteries used in an electric lawnmower. Wired in series they make 24 volts at 40 amps!! Metal wires buzz when attatched, so electrical igniters made from throw out balls of rcandy might be useable with the extreme heat made by this thing.
