Rocket and noise?

Post by HattoriHanzo » Mon Feb 13, 2006 1:01 pm

How noisy are small rocket engines, say F=500-1000N?
Is it possible to estimate the soundlevel from a rocket engine with matematics?

If you have a ball park figure of how much acoustic power (W) your rocket emits, you can firstly calculate the sound intensity (I), then get the sound level (L) in decibels, dB. The procedure is quite straight forward. I don't think there is a direct formula between thrust and acoustic power emitted.

140dB is pain enough for unprotected ears.

You tied the hands on your question! What are you looking for?

Average / Peak / Pain /

A dog can could most likely hear a C6-5 a few miles away...

Are you talking about audio able to humans?

Ear damage....

I have hard time to express my self correct in english therefore my qestions can be a bit "incomplete", sorry for that.

1. I was looking for some formula or empirical estimations to calculate the acoustic power generated by the engine.

and

2. How noisy do a rocket engine in the range 500N-1000N in average force powerd by low performance fuel(candy) get? Soundlevel 50m away from the engine?

Now your question makes sense, I am sure there were empirical data for this. According to a rocket textbook, Saturn V at lunch it emits acoustic power of about 2x10^8W, that's huge.
