Hybrid engine with solid oxidizer?

Post by HattoriHanzo » Tue Dec 06, 2005 9:49 pm

Is there any experimental or commercial hybrid rocket engine that use solid oxidizer, like ammoniumnitrate/perchlorate together with liquid fuel like kerosene or gasoline?

Yes back in the 50'sand 60' US research into storable missle motors looked at solid oxidiser liquid fuel hybrids. Sorry it was a long time ago when I read about it and in my modest library.
"solid oxidizer" hybrid in google brings up quite a bit of infomation.

They're often called reverse hybrids. Yes, they have been fooled around with.

One big issue to think about: what form would you use the oxidizer in, i.e. how are you planning to form a structurally sound grain from the oxidizer alone without simply making a solid propellant grain?

And the other issue is: what advantage are you trying to achieve with the design of such a motor?

You are right there, thats a big issue. I assume you must add additives to the oxidizer keeping it from falling apart.

Higher density without using liquid oxidizers.

What is pur?

What oxidizer do you plan on using? I have found that 5 parts wood glue can hold almost 95 parts potassium nitrate, but it takes some wicked mixing!

"pur" is another word for fuel.
