Google "RCANDY" you'll find tons on a simple and cheap solid fuel made from potassium nitrate and sugar.

It works great! I could give instructions here, but there are a few guys who have spent quite a bit of time perfecting this, and building web pages to teach the rest of us how. They deserve the credit.

I will probably be making some solid fuel engines as well using KNO3 and sugar. I have machined these over the last two days.

That's a pretty high expansion ratio. What propellant and operating pressure is it designed for?

none that you could do safely without alot of research, time, and machine work, you'll spend some $$$ too. Play with Rcandy for awhile, you'll like it. Liquid rockets aren't all that great anyway, when you look at the complication, expense. extra weight, and danger involved.

these guys are mixing saltpeter (potassium nitrate) flowers of sulfer and icing sugar will this work

"These little rockets were designed to fly with a very low impulse propellent, and we wanted to make the mixing process as simple and safe as possible, so here's what we came up with. Place the properly measured chemicals into a small plastic refrigerator container with a tight fitting lid (a half pound or one pound soft margarine container works great). Break up any lumps ahead of time with the flat end of a large wooden dowel or screw driver handle, tighten the cap onto the container, shake the ingredients in the container vigorously together for about three minutes, and you're done!"

I was reading Mr. Yawn's aluminum foil rocketry section. He has a nice demeanor, I like his writing style. There's something innocent about using sugar, I bought 150 pounds of KNO3 when I was 12. Buying 10 pound bags of sugar was way more expensive per pound than the 50 pound bags of KNO3 fertilizer.
Note on the aluminum foil section the sketch of the match rocket man. He's got a suit on, yet another nostalgic propulsion scientist who wears a suit while working.

Oh for craps sake. No one ever does a search on this forum. I posted this 2 or 3 times, but here it is again.

Pretty much everything you'll need to know about building solid fuel rocket. Liquid fueled is a completely different animal, and should only be attempted if you have the money and equipment to spend. Just doing a search for "liquid rocket" and you'll see I've posted links probably 2 years ago, regarding this.

Paul.
