This too reminded me of something I saw in Jane's, and that is a duffle bag with prop that can be inflated into an airplane. I think someone previously posted the inflatable craft design with two men flying along in the air. I would post it but I am really tiring of scanning and posting. Jane has worn me out.

Thre are workable modern inflatable aircraft. Check out this Swiss company: http://www.prospective-concepts.ch/

The website is not the most user friendly of websites, but persist and you will see some amazing craft.

Here's a pump up human "air craft" of sorts.

Some of those designs give a whole new meaning to the word "air" plane.
Interesting stuff. I wonder if any has ever sprung a leak?

I think they have an internal cell construction that does not allow leaks to become general. A slow leak would manifest itself gradually. A bigger craft would have means of in-flight repressurization, too. Even smaller craft can carry a small compressed air bottle, I guess.

The construction is amazingly tough. I've seen pictures of cars driving across inflated 'bridges' that were only about a foot thick and completely unsupported by trusses, wires or anything else.

I guess the construction is something like a penis. The flaccid thing can become remarkably stiff when pumped up with blood. Those Swiss guys do it with plastic rubber and air.

Well whatever works for them I suppose, If they started to leak, I suppose the smaller craft would have some sort of Viagra capsule they could use?
