OK, found some graphite in the cupboard and answered my own question. Based on two tests it seems to fire just as readily as the nichrome igniters. Perhaps they are a bit more fragile but are easier and quicker to make.
Below is the stripped wires, dipped in graphite/acetone and then BP/NC/Al/acetone.
BP/NC/Al/acetone can be expediently replaced with matchheads and nail polish :) if that be easier to aquire. and you can make pretty coloured igniters. Smokeless powder, ping pong balls and nailpolish are all sources of nitrocellulose.
