Oxidisers

Post by Tom » Sat Oct 30, 2004 1:14 pm

Where do you guys get your stuff for playing around with, if you do? I have to resort to petshops to pick up Potassium Chlorate pills for fish tanks, its the only source I have found for them. I can get Potassium and Ammonium Nitrate, But as with the Potassium Perchlorate, the prices are steep.

Hi there.

I've never bought it, but you will find it here The only problem i see is a £50 minimum order.

You could also try here; http://www.gardendirect.co.uk/ you would have to phone and ask if they sell it/get their catalogue as their site has been under contruction for as long as i can remember. I know they sell some chemicals, at quite good value, but am not sure about chlorates.

Have you thought about trying to synthesize your own?

Potassium Chloride is much easier to get hold of, shame you dont need that lol ;-)

HTH.

You don't want to use Chlorates for an oxidizer in a rocket motor, then tend to be pretty unstable.

Better choices are;
Potasium Nitrate (available at a garden center as stump remover, look for the words "contains Potasium Nitrate")
Ammonium Nitrate, you'll want the phase stabilized stuff
Ammonium Perchlorate

The above are listed in rising order of specific impulse. Potasium Nitrate will get you from around 70 seconds to around 150 seconds depending on the fuel you choose. Ammonium Nitrate will get you from around 120 seconds to around 200 seconds. Ammonium Perchlorate will get you from around 180 seconds up to around 280 seconds. The fuel you choose is going determine how much "bang for your buck" you get. KNO3/Charcol/Sulfur (black powder) is a low impulse (around 70 S) rocket fuel. KNO3/Sucrose gets you a better impulse (around 120) for the same oxidizer.

Look closely, all the powders in a tupperware from a sideview are superimposed!!

Seriosuly look at the orange pink and green ones, the little ridge down the side is a dead giveaway.

Never said they were bad, just wanted to make sure my eyes aren't pklaying tricks on me.

Actually they give very nice descriptions of each item and some have videos and msds safety sheets

prices are very expensive..... But yea those pictures are all the same, a hand and a container. They just added in the color. Look at the hand in each, and the rotation of the container. All identical.

My point, also wouldn't it have been easier to just take 20 pics than to edit each one to a specific color? Just an opinion...
Firefox has great prices, but you gotta send in a copy of ur drivers liscence and all that. No biggie just kinda a hassle. Skylighter is also good
