Good Stuff

Post by Jim Berquist » Sat Dec 30, 2006 4:50 pm

So now you have to activate all new members! That could be cool....They don't come in that fast anyways......

I don't think that will deter the ones that really want in, do you?????

I think that will deter most bots and bone heads.........Jim

[quote="Mike Everman"]I have changed the sign up to admin activation. I recieved about 20 requests last night, all spam bots.
This may work.

Blessedly.

Yep, this is the way to go. It's very simple to tell the spammers before they can get in. they can't be troubled with making believable profiles for every forum they're hitting.
This is by far less work than dealing with the messages.

You'll probably find that the amount of requests will drop off rapidly too, once the spamming fucktards realise their automated signup bots can't get in they should remove us from their lists, which just leaves the new ones that discover us.

Well done, anyway; I hope this reduces your workload.

Please continue applying spam reducing mods to the forum, like captcha & question/text captcha etc. trust me, having a spammer realise the only thing they can do is add new members isnt a good thing ;)

A forum we hosted for someone had around 200,000 signups in under a day from multiple places around the world. This could very easily have been 2,000,000. Either way it made a mess of the user approval mailbox.

Jim, I looked at your profile, and you have html on, so how about pointing out one that doesn't work for you?

Mike:

It seems that I am not able to post photo's to the forum if I am running ICQ! The forum closes the link and request I log back in..

That may have been the problem with the links I tried to access!!!

When I disable The ICQ, Problems go's away........I am on a Toshiba 105 lap top and dial up! Band width may be the problem...Or could be ICQ that I just signed up with to talk to my old friend in England...

HI Administrators,

Can You go to the memberlist and eliminate all of the idiots with "0" posts.
There are pages and pages of these " members " who obviously have nothing to contribute to the forum !!!!!!

Talking like a pirate does not qualify as experience, this should be common sense, as pirates have little real life experience in anything other than smelling bad, and contracting venereal diseases
