Metal Spinning Viable Construction Method?

Post by Swamper » Fri Aug 14, 2015 5:53 pm

Are any of you familiar with metal spinning on a lathe-like machine? Here's a video for those of you who are curious about the method https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43N44ICyuEU
I was just thinking this could be an easier method for making cones and chamber flares without having to create a template and weld sheet. It would also look a bit cleaner than if it had lateral weld seams. Aesthetics are everything

edit: moved to Tools and construction

Maybe if you're going into some serious production runs. Otherwise, I don't see the benefit over the "traditional" way. Also, I think more people have welders than lathe's with the equipment to do this.

I was planning on strapping an array of 4-5 medium sized jets on my jonboat, and I have the lathe and not the welder, so that's why the idea came to me. I guess it's not really any advantage, just an option for folks who want to try some more complex parabolic flares and such.
