Actually I think lisp is pretty straight forward.

Somewhere along the lines it looked like code was becoming more complicated, just for the sake of being complicated.
Beauty is a relative observation, usually followed by two schools of thought:

A. The more complicated something is, the more beautiful it is.

B. The more simple something is, the more beautiful it is.

It typically is easy to make things complicated, much more difficult to strip them down to the bare essentials and still have the function.

Its kinda interesting since the free software movement has gained traction, code is starting to become relatively easy to read and write again.
