Need discs

Post by Rossco » Thu Aug 30, 2007 10:07 pm

Anyone here know where i can get made/cut about 30 SS 1mm discs on the cheap?

OR, even better, any company or individual willing to get onboard with some sponsership and be involved in PJ history??? I need some discs!
Big things are happening here, although the budget is a bit tight on this project.

So close... just need a last part or two, or 30.

Edit... obviously 1mm thick, not diameter. 6" diameter, or there abouts.

I'd go to a largish lokal sheet metal workshop. Chances are that they can just stamp them out for you in no time. If you find one that makes holes of that size into sheet metal for other reasons, such as a company that makes ventilation systems or some kind industrial chemical equipment, they might even have them as scrap metal you can have for free.

SS circles

If you've got a drill press, you can get a circle cutter to make any size circle you want. Go to www.mcmaster.com and search on item 3082A2 for holes up to 7 7/8th inches wide.

Also, you can use other types of hole cutters like item numbers 4008A68 and 4066A75

mmm, thanks for that.

How do those hole cutter things go? Ive seen them, and always thought that they would be pretty scary on sheet SS.
Cheap enough, ill try!

No, they suck on 304 sheet. Like, one might get you one disk. It's also a quite large die set for a sheet metal shop. The shop I use is all under 3".

Best bet is water jet cutting. Tell them you want to supply the material.

Sounds all a bit suspiciously like a Tesla project... hmmmm... ):-P

Dang, if you weren't on the opposite sie of the planet I'd cut them out for free. I've got a jig for my plasma that cut's perfect circles from 4" to 6' diameters.

Everyone needs one of these!

you can get perfectly round disk out of hardrives, sometimes 4 of them. high quality as they are, they are not stainless. Check local computer stores for defective hdd's

Hard drive platters are, indeed, very good (extremely high tolerances), but fall a bit short of the 6" diameter. Unless you can find some really old disk packs, of course.
