Adjustable Intake

Post by Mike Everman » Sat Jun 09, 2007 5:54 am

I had some fun making an adjustable intake (1" od x .035 wall).

The intake goes from 4" to 5.75" and has a sleeve inside that is .003" 304 half hard stainless, spot welded seam, spot welded to one tube. I'm really happy with how well this worked out. Inside, you can hardly feel where the sleeve edge begins, but it's remarkably rigid between tubes. I can double the expansion by not securing the sleeve to one tube end.

It's really snug. Takes about 5 lb pull to make a length change, and it's sealed up tight anywhere you put it.

I'm about to take this intake to my whirly motor and use the calibrated leaf blower. I want to burn some fuel this weekend!

As to the tool part, the critical tool for this was a capacitive discharge spot welder for fine work (like making battery packs).

Hello Mike -- Nice work. Not much beats an adjustable intake.*

Way back in the day, did you use this spot welder on your m-k?

Cheers,
M.

*Well, two, or better yet, four(!) adjustable intakes would. =)
