Circuits & Gizmos and Msg Thds about Spark Ignition Syst

Post by Mark 42 » Thu May 31, 2007 4:21 pm

I have been compiling information about electrical circuits (and gizmos)
to provide a spark to start a pulsejet engine. I decided I'd post what
I have so far. I will come back and edit &/or add to it in the future.

Maybe when it's all done a Moderator can clean it up, add more
labels to links and such, and then move it to the FAQ.

A fairly simple circuit using an ordinary Bosch relay and an automotive
ignition coil:

Also, regarding using a standard ignition coil for a transformer in
an ignition device (like in the circuit with the Bosch relay as an
oscillator):

Excerpt #1
12 volt points igniton coils need around 3.2-4 ohms to give good points
life. Some aftermaket coils may have this much resistence built in
already. Use an ohm meter to check between the two small terminals on
the coil, most are 1.8 ohms, which would need an external ballast resistor.

Excerpt #1
The total resistance of the coil plus any external resistor (if used) should
be 2.7 to 3.3 ohms for a 12 volt system. This level of resistance will
maintain the correct voltage and amperage in the ignition circuit. Coil
resistance is measured between the plus (+) and minus (-) terminals.

Spark O Matic systems and means

Post by Jim Berquist » Thu May 31, 2007 5:32 pm

That's a start. There must be a page or two more out there some place. Most are re burns of the same Ideas. Some are comical in nature. Did you include Eric's dissected weed eater magneto portable drill set up?

This is a good Idea. How meny times have we heard these questions?

Nope! Not it. I will see if I can find it for you...It was a weed eater carcass with only the crank shaft and magneto left. Come to think about it, I think I have only seen it on his how to start a P.J. Youtube film.
