Sealing a crack in a metal tube

Post by kd2 » Thu Feb 22, 2007 8:39 am

Good morning
A bit of off tupic -

My Scooter's exhaust system has a crack in the back of the muffler.
Usually i would weld it shut with a welder but its seriously thin.
Im building exhaust systems as a hobby but i never fixed one so thin.
My question is

Can i solder "Tin" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tin - like the one you would use to solder wiring - im sorry if that isn't the right word...dictionary...)filling the crack?
Would it hold on or fail because of the rattling?

other suggestions?

thanks guys

Soldering a crack

If you cant tig weld it...

You can solder it but not with regular solder like for your electronic parts. You will need "Silver Solder" such as used in "Silver Brazing." You will also need some flux as that will help it grip to the tin too. I have simply silver brazed rather then welding holes at the intakes of my ramjets. Aslong as you are SURE the heat wont exceed 700* it should hold pretty well. Be aware though lots of vibration may shake it loose over time. Its a quick fix for something that should really be tig welded.

I asked a steam mechanic the same question and he said -
"Soft soldering like copper/tin/brass isn't strong as welding or silver brazing, but still very good for sealing leaks in pipes with low pressure"

He also said that the "Catch" here is to worm the surface also - not just the filler, and the surface must be rough so the melting metal will have a grip.

Looks like it will do the job.
what do you think?
Anyway i will try it and come back with results.

thanks again

I know that the ideal way is to Tig it.
But i dont have that kind of a welder.
that exhaust system sucks anyway - i want to fix it temporary for now and later i will build a nice normal exhaust for that scooter.
