High voltage for spark systems

Post by Jim Berquist » Sun Feb 11, 2007 5:30 pm

I just purchased two Plasma Lamps from Wall Mart. The globe is about 3 inches. Batteries, 4 AA. Should drive a spark plug rather well......

A interesting feature is it has a sound tracking fire system.. Could be cool!!

Sale Price: $1.00 each

High voltage for spark systems

Post by Mark » Sun Feb 11, 2007 7:23 pm

Can you post a picture of a naked spark? I want to see how far it can jump in air? Sparks jump much better in a vacuum. Also it may be more of a drain on the device and I'm just saying it might not take the heavier duty cycle to drive a good spark. It seems kind of frail.

spark source

Your right! Globe is full of Argon/Neon.........Voltage should be there...

Current levels may be low......I will test it out and submit photo's

with a common spark plug!!!!

I wonder if the sound activated system would track the 130 kHz the little beast that Eric bult for me?????? Could be sort of self tilming!!!

Walmart high voltage source

Post by pezman » Mon Feb 12, 2007 1:17 am

Bug zappers in the off season are the ultimate WalMart spark generator.

You can probably get them for about $3 or so right now. I think that they generate about a 6kv output at currents that seem high enough to ruin your day if you get zapped.

The transformers seem to work reasonably well when used as a traditional fly-back (a la a car ignition coil) or you can trigger one really mean spark by hooking the cap in a disposable camera battery to the primary coils -- or you just plug the thing into 12 vac and generate a wicked spark that will easily jump from the electrode of a spark coil to the rim.

Spark source

Uhhhhhh! Embarrassment sets in!!!

Spark source sucks....I removed the globe by just pulling on it. The globe pulls staite up and off no glue no Nada !!!!! . This exposes the HV wire and nothing else!! I tuned it on and saw no evidence of corona. I place a ground from the neg end of battery box to spark plug and HV wire to end of Spark Plug..... Just saw a vary fine blue arc.....

No white, No yellow, no red arc......

I got brave and touched the hot wire.....again just a fine blue arc to my finger from about 1/4 inch away.....No Pain, zing sensation and not much else... blackened skin on impact point. Blackened skin rubed off no damage incurred....Ione Transfered metal content....

I had more from the door Knob!!!!!!

May make a good plating system?

Voltage must be something like 6 or 8 kilovolts. Current like 10 pico amps..

.000,000,000,01 amps

May jump start a heart if hard wired!!!!!

In side the globe with Argon and Neon.........Shows plasma out to about 2.5 inches away.......

Spark O Matic,,,,,,,NOT

spark source

Yes, I bought about 4 for $10.00 or something really cheap from some electronic parts catalog. I guess I am kind of tired, I didn't even look at the shipping price, I wouldn't have posted it.
I've a piece of glass you sent me, narrow at both ends, one end larger than the other. I need to start doing some quartz testing, every weekend I think I will force myself to make a reed but I just can't seem to muster the energy or creativity.
I'd like to stuff some of my quartz up the tail of a Dynajet like Larry did with metal and soften a piece of my quartz tubing and blow it so as to form a typical pulsejet shape.

spark o matic

Post by Jim Berquist » Wed Feb 21, 2007 2:55 am

Crazy how everyone is on the Quest for the better Spark O Matic!!!

Like the first Magic Bullet!!!

Seems to be one of the first Nubee Q......How to make the spark.

I my self know how to make a spark at least 15 ways....Yet what would be the easy way......Every one wants the simple and sure fire way...

The best I've seen as so fare is the Sparkler.......

New Mexico is one of the last States to sell fire works thank God!!

Eric: one sparkler gives me 30 seconds to get the stuff up and on!!!

My only concern is if it is pitting the insides with the temp generated?
