Should I be using a flashback arrestor

Post by zero-stealth » Wed Dec 13, 2006 9:10 pm

Inline from the tank to the injector?

Basically, can/should I run a straight hose from the propane tank to the PJ, nothing inbetween?

I'll start my first post with something easy...

The system is effectively shielded from combustion sustaining air by the hose and the tank--so in normal operation this isn't an unsafe method of fuel delivery because "no air-no fire", however:

There has been some mention on the forum that the pressure waves created by the pulse-jet can cause adverse fuel supply reactions when they travel up the hose. (Although the small jet I built didn't demonstrate this and it used a direct supply)

A potentially dangerous situation can be created when the tank is empty--it is possible for the tank to be drained to a pressure below atmospheric (dependent mainly on the temperature of the tank) which could allow air to be pushed into the hose and/or tank, if this were to happen it is possible (though unlikely due to the stoichiometric constraints for combustion) that the tank could explode.

Ultimately it's up to you--could your tank explode? Yes. Will it explode? Probably not--but you know the saying "better safe than sorry".

Or, in other words: "Do you feel lucky, punk?"

No
Flashback arrestors are a really good idea for acetylene lines as acetylene can burn / explode with out any oxygen. That said older oxy acteylene rigs such as mine don't have them, you just always turn the acetylene torch valve on first and then when finished off first.
The possibility of getting air into a propane tank and thus creating an explosive mixture would require substained stupidity to a very high level.
