Simple thrust gage for mid range thrust
It just dawned on me, the simplest thrust gage possible, if you have a dial type torque wrench that is..
Mount the torque wrench on something heavy with it's square drive vertical. Attach an arm to the square drive, however blows your skirt up, and make a motor clamp so the motor centerline is tangential at some known radius. Obviously, if your gage reads in foot-pounds, and the motor centerline is at 12", then the gage is direct reading in pounds.
No bearings and direct reading!

Limited accuracy, but absolutely ingenious!

Cool stuff Mike!
Torque wrenches come in all sorts of variations and ratings.
A few ounces to tons!!!!
May be just the ticket for the little Thermojet??
Is this what you was thinking?
My art work sucks but should give you the Idea!
Most torque wrenches are calibrated based on the center line of the wrench. 3/8........1/2" I don't think it would take in effect of the cantilever of the attached rode to the engine!!!!
Would 1.5 lbs read as 3.o lbs???????

That's it, Jim. Also, the angle it will go through to make a reading is so small, you can even do it with the square drive horizontal, and the motor arm hanging down.

You don't think the bar tied to the P.J. would sway/bias the reading do to leverage?

I don't think so. You can always zero it, and the weight or any imbalance of the motor and the arm would have to swing through some angle for that to show up, which will not be significant.

Mike:
I have a torque wrench that can handle up to 10lb.....
I'm going to try it...
It was made to place connectors on cables.....I have to mickey mouse , wiggler rig a connector on the torque end. Just a connector and peace of rod...
If it is true within a 1/4 lb I'll be happy.....
I really want to make Eric's little beast take flight!
I think it can do it!!!!!

If I can sauce out some 3 or 4 lbs out of it It should be able to loft 2 meter glider, bungee launched........
Any one out there want some bungee??? Yellow surgical silicon bungee cord! Solid,,, Problem is 10 and 15 ft lengths!.....Tension is around 30 ft lb per meter............ It's wast from products made in the shop! I brought home about 4o ft of it and my son wrapped it around a couple of door knobs and let it loose... Not Good!!
Two types: 3/8 inch and 1/4 Inch........Both rated @ 30 lb per meter of elongation.......
Duck and Cover!!!!!!

Cool! Let me know how it goes. The important thing to maximize accuracy will be the radius from the motor centerline to the center of the square drive. Keeping the motor centerline tangent to that radius is the thing, or knowing what the radius is that is perpendicular to the motor centerline, more precisely. whatever. have fun!
