I noticed there's a distortion or heat stress effect of a black band around the Absolut vodka bottle only seen when held at an acute angle. The band goes completely around the bottle from the individually glued on letters on front to the clear plastic ~1 inch wide strip on the back of the bottle. The heat distorted the plastic label but also the label free areas as well.

Perhaps the bottle didn't crack because as it goes down to the pool of fuel, it's not touching the sides so much and at the bottom maybe splash evens out the heat stress there, sort of like a magnetic bottle trying to keep the heat from melting the walls of a fusion reactor. Another thing is the snorkel depth was at first tried at the top of the neck and after watching how the flame breaks as it enters the main body the outcome seemed to make a reverse cone of what you normally see, wide flame on top and narrow at the bottom like a tornado. But by pushing the snorkel deeper to the verge of the main body, the break or fanning out of the flame occurs right on top of the pool of fuel. At any rate how coherently the flame-front holds together or stays focused as it travels the length of the bottle is very important.

I should say the distortion formed in the region where the flame widens. The last photo shows a large area where no letters or plastic label is on the bottle, the back label plastic strip just visible on the top right of the photo.

This conical shape is interesting in that at the top you don't have a lot of blank space with no fire like a typical jam jar. I like how the flame fills the slanted decanter while still leaving a slim gap along the sides where a direct flame might be more llkely to crack a bottle. The bottom is an exception but there there is some splash which might moderate a direct flame to some extent. If you freeze the video you can better observe the cone of fire, with a possible slight bias to one side from the non-vertical angle or imperfect cant of the exhaust tube.

It's a good idea to wear hearing protection with these souped-up jam jar jets. I was getting quite frustrated with the decanter, it took a lot of patience to find what works. One thing to come to understand is if it doesn't start or sound promising after a few tries, move on because most likely you'll waste your time hoping against hope. A few times one shape has started on the first try and ran but then never again. When you run into that, try stepping up or down the length or diameter of the exhaust tube an inch or so. And have other experiments in mind to try so you don't get bored with temporary failures. If you find a good match, these engines can be forgiving.

This caught my eye, a store-bought jam jar jet in "durable borosilicate glass". They are very much like my Princess House oil candle lamp only no busy grass etchings or cone tapered top, a perfect cylinder but you must take caution for the hole might be "energetically restrictive". Wear eye protection if you should experiment with these and plan if it should burst on the initial whoosh, just to be safe. It seems like at least one of the heights offered would have a good chance of performing nicely for a show and tell.

The first time this ran the exhaust tube shifted during the run and it stopped after only 5 seconds or so. But it was nice to see an ordinary wine bottle can become a jam jar jet too.
Here's an old post from 2013 when I first thought about it. In the video review the lid is said to look like a Smucker's jam jar lid.

The El Dorado rum bottle is proving extremely hard to solve. the neck widens and narrows and bottles that are not cylindrical don't seem to channel the flame as much as a typical bottle. It might as well be a sphere which I dislike most of all, the flame front is chaos with more of a non-repeating pathway.
You can see the neck better here, which might also disrupt feedback rather than a straight shot into the bottle as with more common shapes.

Speaking of coherent flame fronts from the last post, there was this Coleman heater I took apart in the early days to use the fuel tank as a possible jam jar. It has a pancake shape with about a 1 inch hole in the center which when lit would flutter if fueled with methanol but was unstable and would stop running after a short time. As the flame could advance left or right as it entered the tank, it made for a bad jam jar jet.
