I ordered one of these that change color for a jam jar jet effect, which looks like a cherry blossom coming to life. Maybe I'll make the methanol burn green with boric acid to contrast the pink or lithium chloride for a brighter red. Wonder if the higher heat will bring out any more color or not?

Funny, I just saw a commercial for Transitions lenses that change color stepping outside. But a blurb at the bottom of the commercial in fine print said the photochromic effect is dependent on temperature, UV, and lens material. I always thought it was just UV that did it.

Maybe you could have a pair of those sunglasses near a jam jar jet enough so that they would transition when the jam jar was lit. At any rate being a plastic coating or laminate in glass, most photochromic materials won't stand up to direct heat for long.

So these rechargeable flameless arc lighters are kind of unique for lighting jam jar jets. The first ones made an awful high pitched hum but now they are all but silent. If you don't like flicking flint or clicking piezos which eventually takes a few tries when the lighter is old or the bother of buying butane this is for you. And flint lighters make a wisp of smoke while these make a hint of ozone. Only the pencil shaped ones will light a jam jar easily due to the angle and short arc prong motif. The typical lighter shaped one I have requires the lightest of touches of a button to turn on a double arc effect. And you can buy triple arc designs too. There are a multitude of choices on eBay.

I ordered this used ebay cylindrical volumetric flask thinking it might be a piece of laboratory glassware that would be ideal for demonstrating the jam jar jet effect, with the enhanced effect of a snorkel increasing thrust and sound all without modification hopefully. It's curious to wonder if it occurred to anyone to try to repurposed this shape as a jam jar jet with snorkel. There are a couple of volumetric flask whoosh bottle effects on youtube but the more common volumetric flask proportions unsuitable for a sustained reaction.
There are also these square liter sized flasks that approximate a working shape although rather expensive new as well for such frivolity.

I noticed this 2 liter size is listed for $210.00 and probably shipping costs. Being curious I decided to try that shape having found 4 of them (same Kimble 28040 flask) for sale for $34.00 each or best offer on eBay, new old stock so I bought one along with free shipping. The square flask is 5 X 5 X 18 inches, a relatively sizable jam jar jet snorkeler if it works.

I saw these high temperature combustion quartz tubes and couldn't help but muse what if squirting some methanol in them, how would they rev up or not.

There's a bevy of interesting variations of these convenient USB rechargeable arc lighter shapes and demonstrations on youtube. They're such a compact ignition system for a pulsejet spark plug if you were to wire one up running some leads from the tiny pin electrodes.

In other news I managed to find this same fused quartz shape on eBay for 20 dollars but haven't gotten motivated enough to attempt some cobbled together shape that runs. The new one doesn't have that unexpected pinhole reduction in the neck.

I noticed this fish bottle in a farm supply store for 3 dollars. Removing the straw and silicone grommet makes it an off the shell no build jam jar jet. With just a small amount of methanol it's perky starting but flames can't quite reach the bottom to sustain it. But with an inch of methanol to change the volume and depth, it runs stunningly fast. The longish shape seems impervious to the slosh which can sometimes hamper other shapes. The bottle is 7.5 inches tall and I measured it actually holding 11 ounces if topped off. I guess with straw it's 9 1/2 inches tall.

And then I found the jar doesn't sustain. Because I was worried the jar would crack it was only run for a second or two and stopped. But right after a few vigorous seconds it constantly flames out. It runs longer but unimpressive with larger amounts of methanol to reduce the volume. Perhaps a slightly larger hole diameter would help or a snorkel to make the inflow more coherent, enough to reach the relatively deep bottom of the jar to dance on and vaporize the fuel. Or a different fueling method.

This one I really liked, how delicate the transitions are, settling in to another mode of vibration at times, like a spinning top deciding to revert to a different kind of wobble. At other times the acceleration and deceleration reminded me of a motorcar on a winding road.

I thought this was interesting how you can run a Rijke tube in the horizontal position. I'd like to see these fellows try to pour the note out of this new arrangement.

External combustion engines are sort of new to me but some are amazingly easy to build. There's no hassle with the fuel/air mixtures and the same with the thermoacoustic Rijke tube or Sondhauss tube variations. They have some analogies to pulsejets but are more ear friendly.
I'm working on a boat like this one this fellow Blade made. It's interesting how much steady airflow you can get from a heated closed end tube. Of course it's not much but the stream of air is way more than you would think. And with my quartz tubing you don't have to worry about the glass cracking. The one I made feels like a little fan when it runs, and unexpectedly the jet exhaust is not the least bit warm and very quiet unlike Rijke or Sondhauss tubes.

This is a Sondhauss tube tube which is just a tube closed at one end, maybe analogous to a Schmidt tube being linear instead of an enlarged combustion chamber offering more capacitance. The steel wool stack is heated just forward of the stack, the end closest to the closed end.

Another thing to wonder about is if you could make a jam jar jet run from an external heat source or electrically heated wires in a jar. The idea being heat the jar containing steel wool fibers or such and evacuate all the air in the jar. Then quickly remove a stopper from the lid and have the inrushing air suddenly heated and expand enough to self-cycle air repeatedly.

Instead of steel wool for these engines this was another materials science approach for both absorbing and releasing heat.
"The lengthwise thermal conductivities of graphitized carbon fibers range from about 300 to about 1,000 Wm-1K-1 -- about 20 to 67 times the thermal conductivity of stainless steel. The transverse thermal conductivities of these fibers are only about 1/100 of their lengthwise conductivities. If these fibers were combined with low-thermal-conductivity matrix materials, the resulting composite materials would exhibit high anisotropy of thermal conduction. In principle, such fibers and matrix materials could be used to advantage in a regenerator in the following ways:

The fibers could be used to conduct heat between the flowing gas and the flow-channel walls.
The walls could be made of a composite material containing radially oriented fibers to utilize the thermal-conduction anisotropy to maximize radial conduction between the wall and the fibers in the channel while minimizing undesired axial conduction. Preferably, the matrix material in the wall would be one of high specific heat as well as low thermal conductivity."

If you watch closely, this was interesting how many times the syringe stops running only to restart from the bonk of the returning ping pong ball.
