Here's a salvage operation from the other day, a long time ago a ~21 inch quartz tube was mailed to me with no fragile glass warning on the flimsy box and as such it was dead on arrival and another sent to me. When I get quartz from China it takes several minutes just to get at the tubing it's so well packed in tape and sturdy styrofoam of some sort! But having saved the pieces there was a section that was still useful so it was put aside albeit a jagged monster most would have discarded. It's a larger diameter than the little quartz jam jar I ran in a video. I suppose if I put it in the lathe and wet sand it, it would be close to what you can buy. So here it is next to the quartz crucible jam jar jet, and it was just a TLAR guess as to where to make the cut - the jagged broken end piece about 7 inches/18 cm long before sawing.
The red plate is a lens off an old stop light, haven't found a use for it yet in Pulse Jet Land.

If you really want to square that up, you probably want lathe + toolpost grinder. Diamond wheel on a dremel type thing would do the trick.

And then flame fuse the edge entirely smooth ... a lot of fine touches one could have if they had the expertise and wherewithal. I'm in the process of trying to get a quartz jam jar jet made for me. Who knows if it will come through. They asked me to make a drawing so I banged out this rudimentary sketch quickly. It's nothing but a jar with a lid you know. One thing I've learned is you have to be very precise and neat as there's a language barrier to some extent. Looking at this region in China, apparently there are tons and tons of natural quartz crystals bestowed on that part of the world. Heraeus a big name in quartz, based in Germany, is camped out there and other corporations too I suspect. There's a lot of talent there. Looks like they make perfect U-bends and spirals, all sorts of exotic shapes as well as CNC quartz objects.
If I approached an American company, they'd be asking an arm and leg probably and for a single item a lot of companies wouldn't even bother with me. There's nothing more fun than having someone explain to you we don't do small orders. So I appreciate that there are still places in this world where you can get something made on a small scale without having to be a corporation. Any you pay your nickel and take your chances. ha

Good for a laugh, what I tried to convey, my m's sometimes look like n's ...

Hi,
Could you please tell the unit of the drawing? There are mm and nn? I do not know what is your meaning by 'nn'.
Thanks and looking forward to hearing from you.
Best regards
Elaine

Yeah, the language barrier is a big problem, mostly what you write will be translated to chinese via google translate, and the reply translated back to 'murican via google translate - machine translation's getting better, but there's still loads of room for ambiguities to become a problem.

And yeah, your "m"s look like "n"s to me as well. Better than mine, though, which look like a drunken spider crawled through an inkwell. Would have been funny if you got delivered something on the nanometer scale :)

Yea, it would have been funny and nice to get some blue morpho diffraction grating nano structures built into the walls of the quartz jet because who wants an ordinary transparent quartz jam jar when you could have iridescence blues here and there shimmering with the visible fire action. I guess I could ask for ion beam etched multi-layer interference patterns on the next one. Or a tiny stylized postage stamp size hologram etched into the glass of The Man. Might as well go all out.

Well my simple quartz jam jar may start being made in about 3 days from what I understand. At any rate I bought something on eBay entitled "Customized Quartz Flat Bottomed Product With a Hole in the Center of One Bottom". That's got to be one of the quirkiest phrased listings and interpretation of the drawing I sent.
So if anyone asks what my new jam jar jet is, I can say confidently that it's a customized quartz flat bottomed product with a hole in the center of one bottom. ha

If you don't mind my asking, how much did they quote to make it?

It wasn't cheap but not immense, $31.00 which is what I paid for a similar size quartz crucible several years ago plus $9.99 shipping.

If you click on this jacketed beaker and enlarge the photos, it's tempting to thing about making a jam jar jet out of one, after all it comes with a convenient water-cooled jacket. And if you were to pierce/drill a tiny hole in the bottom of the calibrated beaker, maybe a constant feed of fuel could be introduced there. You just need to make a top with a hole for a " Beakery" jam jar jet. Probably borosilicate would hold up for some time as a jam jar jet, certainly it would fare a lot better than an ordinary jar and with water or methanol jacketing the beaker perhaps that's all you'd need to have a jam jar jet that wasn't prone to cracking. The thinner the borosilicate glass, the much better chance it has of not cracking. A retired well-to-do elderly chemist in West Hartford, Connecticut told me that, when I was buying some large Erlenmeyer flasks from him at his house, not too far from Mark Twain's home by the way.
I was thinking the 50 ml size is pretty close to the fused quartz crucible I ran in a video with an aluminum top.
As a side note, I keep looking at a smallish 500 ml Erlenmeyer flask on my desk, dwelling on making some kind of top for it so that it might be a "Will It Jam" contestant. ha

There're these kids bats that you can pick up for a few dollars at thrift stores that could be used to make a prototype of some sort. This one came with a warning not to use with hard balls and in fact I dented the top of the bat merely chucking it up in my lathe, the aluminum softer than other bats even though the aluminum is fairly thick. Ideally if you are buying a bat, you want one without dampening material inside. Tapping the bat you can get a feel for if it's hollow or not. Some have an easy X-shaped material that's easier to pull out but solid foam ones are a nightmare, even if you blowtorch the thing it's just a hassle. At one time stainless steel bats became a thing and if you could find one of those, then that would be something different too.

I was thinking about getting a quartz "Jam Jar Jet" laser engraved with those words or some variation if it's not too expensive just because and I came across this article where you can put much smaller words on quartz. Imagine a round jam jar jet played like an Edison wax phonograph cylinder or something - just a thought. And then of course what kind of font and logo would you print on a Jam Jar Jet I wonder? Maybe a squid writing the words Jam Jar Jet with one of his arms. ha

Laser-etched quartz will store data for hundreds of millions of years
"It's a shame the technique will not be immediately accessible to everyone. It would be nice if everyone had the chance to get one thing down for perpetuity -- to put down one piece of information and limit yourself to selecting only the most important details of your life, in the same manner that projects like This Is Your Jam ask you to sum up your mood/taste with one song, could prove an interesting exercise. Like TIYJ, the new technique is about only choosing the best, which is subjective, so perhaps their should be a few global questionnaires on how the method could be used to store some of the world's most precious data for future generations."
"While the former can (according to experiments carried out at Kyoto University's lab) withstand temperatures of 1,000 degrees Celsius for two hours and have its information "played" back without "degradation" using an optical microscope, the latter will probably fail within a decade in average conditions."

In other news I decided to step-down the hole diameter of the custom quartz jam jar from 8 mm to 7 mm. The quartz crucible I ran as a test in one of my demo clips is 6.35 mm. I figure tuning it for warmer weather will make it less fussy. An Enfamil jar I have with an 8 mm hole runs zestfully in cool weather but won't even start in the summer here, won't even flutter in fact. That's how much weather influences these things. It's similar in size to my quartz crucible jet.
The glass jar seen below is that infant formula bottle. The other large object is a stainless steel soap dispenser that came with a pump nozzle which screwed on to a threaded neck at the wide end (not seen) that I made into a floating jam jar jet. The wide end sank down in the water more which was convenient to angle the exhaust end up. One of my first boats.

Laser welding of quartz glass workpieces

SOLID FREEFORM FABRICATION OF TRANSPARENT FUSED QUARTZ USING A
FILAMENT FED PROCESS
"This paper presents a study of additive manufacturing of transparent fused quartz
by a filament fed process. A CW CO2 laser (10.6 µm) is used to melt glass filaments layer by
layer. The laser couples to phononic modes in the glass and is well absorbed. The beam and melt
pool are stationary while the work piece is scanned using a standard lab motion
system. Representative parts are built to explore the effects of variable laser power on the
properties of printed fused quartz. During printing the incandescent emission from the melt pool
is measured using a spectrometer. This permits process monitoring and identifies potential
chemical changes in the glass during printing. After deposition, the printed parts are polished and
the transmission measured to calculate the absorption/scattering coefficient. Finally, a low-order
thermal analysis is presented and correlated to experimental results, including an energy balance
and finite volume analysis using Fluent. These results suggest that optical quality fused quartz
parts with low absorption and high index of refraction uniformity may be printed using the
filament-fed process."

I don't see why not, power wise, although this article implies that the better the glass, the less chance it will work nicely : https://www.engraversjournal.com/articl ... index.html

Makes for an expensive squid logoed jam jar, though.

Lots to learn with the various etching techniques. This bottle is kind of different, you could do something similar, put the directions for lighting a jam jar on the bottle itself or whatever else clever that comes to mind. For a personalized bottle you could plagiarize the "With a Jam Jar" text. ha
