This morning Waldo is in Quartzville. Some cuts were made on some fused quartz tubing (I.D. 19 mm / O.D.25 mm). Three pieces were cut on an old diamond saw and they turned out OK and maybe if sanded on the ends they would be better still. Anyway, the quartz vessel intended for this project is 11.5 inches long and 2.9 inches internal diameter matched to a 19 mm / .75 inch snorkel. If that doesn't cut it I've some O.D. 3/4 inch that will step the snorkel diameter down more. So one snorkel is 11.5 inches, the same as the vessel and another 12.5 inches and a third a mere 3 inches X .75 inches/19 mm which will be somehow mated to some ~9.5 mm I.D. X 30 mm long in an attempt to make a small quartz pulsejet.
Also on the large quartz test tube with snorkels I can sleeve the thinner diameter tubing inside the thicker tubing and maybe trombone my way along to find Waldo.

Whereas the Dyna-jet exhaust pipe volume to combustion chamber volume is about 1 to 1, the 12 ounce paintball tank snorkeler with 8 inch NPT pipe snorkel comes in at 545 ml, the breakdown being a skosh under ~500 ml of volume for the tank and 45 ml volume for the snorkel. Divided they give this funny number of 11.11111 to 1.

The tall Budweiser bottle is very close to that, the bottle holding 480 ml of water and the same height as the 12 ounce paintball tank but having a different slope profile on the neck. I've gotten it to rev up with the 8 inch snorkel where it gets hot and then stops after only 3 seconds. Probably it would run longer in cooler weather. The shoulder and neck of the beer bottle the variable as the internal diameter of the paintball tank and beer bottle are probably pretty close as well as nearly the same height.

In other news, for a spinning jam jar helicopter it would probably be best to buy a sheet of balsa about 4 inches wide and a few feet long and make a propeller from that, something that takes more bite out of the air.

I'm working on another found art design, something called an "Insinkerator", that coming from the clamp I'll be using to hold it together, it being a cocktail shaker, the dial-a-drink kind with recipes on the side and you twist the sleeve to reveal a concoction. Should have one with a flaming jam jar jet recipe, say 2 ounces methanol/pinch boric acid garnish powdered charcoal. I had bought one Insinkerator fitting a long time ago at the Goodwill store thinking it might have some purpose and later replaced a disposal on my sink and didn't replace that part because the old one was still fine so I came by a second Insinkerator. I bought the cocktail shake there too, another maybe-it-will-have-a-use gizmo. Now I need to think of how to attach a snorkel in a least effort/fun way.
Here's an apropos cocktail shaker.
https://www.ocado.com/productImages/321 ... 378ab653d4

Lastly the diamond saw is a breeze cutting the 3 mil quartz tubing but the thinner walled tubing is a nightmare to keep it from chipping when you get close to the end of a cut. The last bit you have to grind ever so slowly lest it flake off a big chip. I need to shore up the walls with tape or something to add strength or put something on the inside of the tubing maybe. The 12 inch diamond saw blade albeit very thin is just not delicate enough as is.

So I bought a couple of these stainless steel aerators/wine breathers on sale at the Goodwill store and thought I could use the parts for some things. The funnel fits somewhat snugly over the top of some stainless steel powder shaker found at a kitchen/restaurant supply store. The aerator also makes a perfect pretty 8 stream spray pattern if you put water in the funnel and watch it drain out. Anyway, here's a funny combination wannabe Aerator Snorkeler. The body diameter is slightly wider than a Coke can, coming in at 2.7 inches.

A few more from the odds and ends realm, some tri-clover tinker toys and a 3.25 quart jar I found that has a common small two-piece canning jar lid, pictured next to a half gallon jar and some smaller ones. The last photo looks something like a rendering for some reason.

More press-fit wonders. The aerator funnel fits air tight on these two but the little one the seal can be broken easily if not held down. Both would need a retainer of some sort to keep the aerator from blasting off of course. The fat one is a double-wall coffee karaffe which is really a snug fit with the aerator however, self-aligning and coming to a stop on an internal lip of the karaffe. I cracked the handle and plastic off of it. It looked something like this. http://www.beveragefactory.com/images/T ... 094853.jpg One could drill a hole in the top of the karaffe somewhere and fill the vacuum chamber with fuel for something different perhaps - most certainly it would require some work but maybe a new fueling methodology could come about.

If I had the energy I'd start a series entitled "Will it Jam" something akin to the video series "Will it Blend". Each shape you could guess whether it would have a chance to jam. Maybe the first episode use a stainless steel blender like this one with a snorkel. Note, the stainless steel blender "jam jar candidate" has a thread on the bottom that mates and is made to fit a typical canning jar. It'd be funny too to use their "Will it Blend" soundtrack if possible. Or perhaps use a glass blender and let it crack as it jam jars its way to overheating. All kinds of shapes could be tried, all kinds of objects. Some would work, some would be a lemon. ha

For review, in the previous post the stainless steel blender with jam jar lid affixed atop the supposed creation, the inner piece of the two piece lid is the blender blade drilled out to hold the copper tube snorkel like this.
download/file.php?id=14992&mode=view
download/file.php?id=14991&mode=view

But then I noticed there's this other blade of sorts that hints at a spin effect if it were atop an appropriate sized jam jar on bearings. It's just kind of cute, something to play around with. Not only is it a whisking blade, it's got a snorkel too! ha
It would be fun to try it on jam jar just to see or precipitate a few ideas.

Love the "Will It Jam?" segment idea. ha
Hey, RE that SiO2 youtube video. I'm working on a new spreadsheet that speaks specifically to pulsepots. Can you tell me the volume of the crucible and the diameter and length and any other geometry regarding the exit? The run is quite good and I can easily analyse the sound file to hone my calcs.

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict the pop frequency is 1/3 the natural frequency. Let's see where it lands, eh? Any bets?

The crucible is a 1.4" X 3.7" ratio. The snorkelette hole is a neat .25" in diameter (the underside of the cap completely flat) and .32" long - the cap is kind of thick aluminum, a piece I found at the thrift store sans hole in the center that I drilled out on my mini lathe. Yesterday I was running the quartz SiO2 in the house briefly and could see the flame (unlike in sunlight) see the tiny blue jet of fire beam straight down into the methanol in the bottom of the jar, kind of neat to watch close up.

Although not the same dimensions, this is a good source for quartz tubes with a flattish bottom that could double as a crucible and almost 4 times cheaper than what a crucible like the one in the SiO2 video costs. They are almost 1.2 inches in diameter and about 6 inches long. And there're larger quartz test tube shapes like this one where you can wire wheel the plastic off of it, it was easy enough and didn't even scratch the glass oddly.

I just got done filling a tiny misty pump sprayer with methanol and barking this long quartz tube with a flare. I've done a lot of barking tubes in my time and this one was loud enough to hurt my ears when it barked with a sharp cracking-the-sound-barrier rap! The tube is 21 inches long and ~1.75 inches in diameter, the flare 1.89 inches inside diameter.
The Binaca blast finger pump sprayer helps by introducing a fine mist into the tube. I mean it was so loud of a bark, like a Dyna-jet bark without the staccato. Stunning!

Also a closeup of the SiO2 jam jar jet cap, the underside ...

Another "Will it Jam" contestant, this time a Dan Aykroyd Crystal Head with snorkel. I put a longer snorkel on it too but I didn't get all the length in the photo. And it could be a jam jar too. It could use some colorant in the flames to improve the presentation, such that it is. Maybe for a Halloween edition ... doesn't really come off as being that spiffy. Perhaps a propeller on the head, it's just not there yet. Here's some lore ...
"Crystal Head Vodka was in development at the same time as Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Sensing a conflict, Aykroyd arranged to meet with Steven Spielberg to discuss resolving the issue. To Aykroyd's surprise, Spielberg suggested that he would have liked Crystal Head Vodka to be served at the premiere."

Two things of note, this thing I tried wearing a leather glove holding the funnel snorkel in place as hard as I could but it was too powerful and blasted the snorkel funnel enough to separate from the container, too much confinement - a lot of force there, too much pressure for a person to hold it back that is and it was kind of "not thought out".

The other thing is the fine mist finger pump sprayer, the kind that's like a perfume atomizer. I recall barking those large quartz test tubes before but it was nothing like today, a day that was very humid and yet the sound was stunning. It must be that the mist sprayer affords a much more powerful flame front. I had in the past used a larger finger pump sprayer that didn't mist the methanol nearly as fine. I don't know what else it could be. Perhaps you could achieve the same if you let the methanol evaporate some time after spraying in the fuel. The atomizer sprayer must make the effect so much easier to get the fuel/air ratio just right, far above that of the larger crude sprayer.
I also tried another large quartz test tube, one with a simple flare at the very end of the tube, and it too really hurt my ears. It was about the same size as the other but with less of a flare. So if you ever have a tiny finger pump sprayer it can be very helpful for some things. You really have to hear it for yourself to understand how fast and loud this bark is. And yet in a blink of an eye the last quarter of the quartz tube was really hot. That's some quick heat transfer.

Here's the other barking dog quartz tube with a simple flare. It may be that the mist sprayer prevents the barking dog effect from becoming too rich with the fuel/air ratio but whatever the case the fine mist sprayer really works with these tubes. And the perfume-like mist sprayer probably mixes the methanol with the air much better than with a larger sprayer or by just putting some fuel in the tube and mixing it around hoping for the best in varying conditions. They are so loud using this method. And as loud as they are, what could be the optimum length to diameter ratio for a 21 inch tube? If the tube is too short you don't get the oomph/compression and if too long it often becomes spongy and weaker. Also the angle in which you light it sometimes plays a part, how the flame front advances.

An 1853 account gone wrong ...
http://www1.chem.leeds.ac.uk/delights/t ... pt_22.html

The non-risk assessed one ... at the 1 minute 50 second mark and a slow mo clip of it

"The rate of this exothermic reaction is very dependent on pressure, probably the rate of reaction is proportional to the pressure cubed, so if you double the pressure you will increase the rate of reaction by a factor of 8.
This means that if there is a small increase of pressure in the tube the rate of reaction increases producing more heat and more hot expanding gasses. These will increase the pressure even more."

Today I drilled out this paintball tank from a 3/8 inch snorkel seen here running to a 1/2 inch snorkel. It's the only one I have in a 16 ounce size. They're kind of a less common tank size. It's too hot to run with the new 1/2 inch snorkel but it revved up fine. It's interesting how these jets just barely run on the margins, the weather so important.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAudE7ZGkis

And in other news, an order was placed for a piece of fused quartz which hopefully can be made into a Sibley-sized pulse jet, imagine an all quartz pulse jet with no worries of cracking and a light show. You pay your nickel and you take your chances. ha

I measured the volume of the barking dog quartz test tube that fires fast and loud. It held 17 ounces of water or about 503 ml. The Dyna-jet holds 20-21 ounces for comparison.

WAY too much fuel of course and too small a hole in the top but hey.
I would suggest making 2 plates, one with a hole in the bottom for the round section of the test tube to sit in (not pass through) and another for the lid - use 4 x threaded rods to secure the top plate to the bottom plate and seal with silicon at the top.

Saw this and thought of your thought NIck. After having the stainless steel coffee karaffe with funnel kick with so much force that I couldn't hold the funnel down with my leather-gloved hand, it seems my 3 inch by 12 inch test tube should be treated with respect. It was like a bomb went off when I lit the karaffe, several cubic centimeters worth of piston. It was a lot of energy I wasn't expecting and a blast of fire around the separation point. I remember there was a guy selling plans on how to make a pulse jet out of can and the philosophy was also the all-thread technique to hold it all together.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2k-gqBY8CF4

This arrangement with the coffee karaffe and funnel pictured below - One thing I found using that funnel with aeration holes near the exhaust end of a snorkel really dampens feedback. I tried this wine aerator funnel on a smaller can and it ran but very weakly until I covered the holes with tape. The same thing occurred when I tried to run a paintball tank rifle barrel as a snorkel, the kind with noise suppressing holes at the end of the barrel. Not only do the holes suppress sound they also lower the velocity of the paintball I read. This particular black barrel doesn't have any tapering, just holes. And such as it was, I opted for a non-noise suppressor barrel for my paintball tank and paintball barrel snorkeler pictured below. I also tried drilling tiny holes at the base of a snorkel to see how that would do and it too dampened feedback to the extreme.
