Maybe this is old-hat, but you can get a die for 1/4" tapered thread pipe and use it to re-thread a J sized plug. The plug can then be screwed into a pipe fitting (I put them at the end of a "T" for my current project).
The threads seem close enough to the original threads that cross threading does not seem to be a problem.
For some reason, the taps and dies for 1/4" tapered pipe seem to be particularly cheap
