Jet engine

Post by adibrook » Sat Jun 05, 2004 9:37 am

Hey everyone.

I'm going to try to build a jet engine out of a car turbo.

But ther's one thing i don't understand about it. How do you lubricate it? In your jet engine project you talked about oil pressure etch, but where is that oil going?

Found out...

I went to a garage and had a look at an old turbo...And they seems to have a pressurised oil feed.

Strange, but i never knew that! Oh, well, now that i do, i'm pretty confident that i can build a gas turbine after i finish my tiny valveless.

Tiny is...

about 5mm inside dia piping, and 12 mm dia combustion chamber bit.

If it works, this will power a really light model boat, and maybe eventually a plane.

forgive me, but i dont see how that will work, let alone power a plane. i mean, there is no way something like that will generate enough thrust to carry enough fuel?

adibrook if you look in the valveless section you will find that you are not going to get this valveless working. it is to small! people who have been here for years cant even do it!

Even if it could sustain itself, it would be less than 2-3oz of thrust max, if everything was going right... I'm betting you've made it less than a foot long, too, which means it will have to operate at greater than 5-600Hz, which also isn't going to happen, unless you use hydrogen and a sophisticated delivery.

Kentfield's team concluded a lower limit of 22mm dia, but silly me, I'll always look at that as a challenge! I'm really not trying to dissuade you from trying, but some fundamental limits of the acoustic length, acoustic energy available, and fuel mixing must be known and worked around somehow.
Mike Often wrong, never unsure.

Oh...

Oh, ok..Maybe it won't work then...

I'll try to build one abit bigger, with probably about 50mm piping.

scrapyard

Post by adibrook » Mon Jun 07, 2004 3:14 pm

On sat, i'm gonna go down to the scrapyard. They said that if i'm prepaired to take the turbo off myself, it'll be 25 quid, which doesn't seem bad compared to other people who have quoted my about £175.

The turbo i had a look at (which i mentioned previously) had cnackered bearings, so i couldn't use it.
