Allison J-33 engine on eBay

Post by cudabean » Wed Oct 22, 2003 12:31 am

It's kind of fun to go out to eBay to see what jets people are selling. This one produces 4,000 lbs of thrust and weight 1,800 lbs. It's from a Lockheed T-33. It's basically a slightly refined Whittle engine (with two back-to-back centrifugal compressors and two air intakes that vector the compressed air into separate tubes that flow into small combustor cans then the turbine is behind all that.) It's the same essential design as the Rolls Royce Nene and the Russian Klimov VK-1 turbojet that powered the MiG-15. Opening bid is $4,750.

The living room conversation piece

Post by Bruno Ogorelec » Wed Oct 22, 2003 8:43 am

I might buy it to test the pulsating combustors I have been thinking about for some time now.

The big problem is where to put it. The only place I can think of is the living room, with the exhaust nozzle poking out of the balcony door. Just the thing to start party conversations.

It might also make the pigeons -- which have been crapping all over my balcony of late -- think twice before coming here to unload.
