The story of the A400M continues with another installment of the engine development program, a number of news articles listed delays and problems with the static test bed engines, some of these were mechanical and some software for the FADEC system, its worth noting that this engine and propelor is only ever going to work under full digital control.

As you can see from the picture the engine installation is a bit oversize for the wing, a job for real turbine and airframe engineers with real qualifications rather than people who claim to have worked some were but don't say what they did while they were there ;-)

Ok, I know this is a lack of knowledge in aerodynamics on my part, but how the hell does a prop like that create any useable thrust? The rotational drag on those must be incredible!
I suppose that’s why u need 10,000 horses?
Humm, one of those, my nova, now were talking! Just as soon as I save up a few billion I gona get me one, soon set a new land speed record! Maybe I get three, just to be safe?
I don’t see problems, only opportunities.

Maybe I should have said the blades were in the feathered position in the photo ;-)

Update: the test bed C130 has now done its first flight, a follow up article in Flight Global gives the details and new pictures, the project seems to be progressing at a normal pace for a large multinational Euro project, I tend to discount journalistic license taken for the current delays.

Hi All

Well the big bird is finally flying after some significant delays to the program but they all seem to be behind them now with the flight test program underway, here is a nice article from the pilots point of view on that first flight
