escort pump

Post by shawn » Wed Jul 26, 2006 12:44 am

I am planning on going to the junk yard this week to get a ford escort oil pump, the question is about what year should I be looking for older model newer models or does it even matter. Thanks 8)

My advice would be to use a small hydraulic oil pump. I used a car oil pump in my first build many years ago and it was a pain in the arse, I had to make an enclosure for it and set up drive shafts etc - it was big and clumsy. I then went to a hydraulic parts shop and they had these beautifull little pumps (about the size of a human fist) and after a bit of haggling i bought one of these. This unit is fully sealed and very easy to connect oil lines and drive shafts etc. I have been using it now for over 6 years and it still works perfect.

So I would say do yourself a favour and get your oil sytem nice and neat right from the start, remember you only need the oil to stop for about 1 second whilst the turbine is running and you kiss goodbye to bearings and shafts etc.

I´ve used the Escort Mk II?? external oilpump with good results on both big and small turbines.

What You have to to is take the drive shaft and turn a groove in it a few mm in from the end of the housing so you can fit an O-ring to stop oil from leaking out that way.

Then You need to make an adapter plate to route the suction, return and pressure lines thru. Use the gasket as an template. Then get your self an flexible coupling for the drive shaft that fits it and the motor your going to use. I got some old electric lawnmover motors at a garage sale. They where for 24V and about 550W and the RPM was 4000. I drive them on 12V and get about 2000 RPM to the pump. The system have worked solid.

The Escort pumps are handy because they have a pressure regulating valve in them. And the oilfilter is mounted on the pump too...

One safety issue! Get a pressure switch that is set at 2 Bar and put it in the oil line to the turbo and wire is to it shuts down fuel if the oil pressure falls below 2 Bar.

Thanks guys you really helped me, if I choose the escort pump are all the models have externally mounted oil pumps for easy.

Hi Shawn, I have added some pics of my oil system for you. The pic "First GT" shows my first setup using a car pump and oil box, drive motor etc. It did work ok - however I wanted something a little neater than this ( as my goal was to eventually build a kart). The other pics show the little hydraulic pump that I have used for the last 6 odd years (and yes it did end up in a kart). So good luck with your project - I will always rember the first time my little turbo started to spool up - the rush of both fear and excitement is btter than sex! I have also added a pic of my Kart which was a technical success but ultimately very slow and only usable on smooth flat surfaces to a max speed of about 20 kmh.

Hey thanks thats really nice, sorry to keep on bothering you but since the hydraulic pump does not have a fitting for a oil filter how did you mount an oil filter to your oil system? I basically have all the parts for my oil system except for the pump and filter, I have a oil cooler, fan to blow air on it, 1.5 gal tank, drill to drive it, and oil pressure and tempature gauges. 8)

For oil filtration I used the metal EFI fuel filter that you can see in the pics! I can tell you that this filter has been in use for over 6 years ( I probably should change it!) and I have not had any issues with my turbo at all. The filter has to cope with EFI pressures so is more than capable of withstanding oil pressure. I am not sure if others have used these - I needed something compact and reliable and as such chose this easy to setup filter. I use a simple bypass valve to adjust pressure. It would be easy to incorporate a pressure regulating spring and ball bearing arrangement however i have not found this necessary. I simply start the engine with a leaf blower at around 5 psi oil press (dont try to start at full oil pressure - the drag on the turbo shaft will be to high and engine will not spool up), as soon as I have about 2psi compressor pressure (self sustaining) i turn pressure up to 60 psi........simple. One last tip use a high quality oil like Mobil 1 - thick oils will make your engine VERY difficult to start when cold and may result in damage to turbine due to overheat during starting phase.

Could I go about getting one on ebay or http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/ ... +1500&Ne=2 ,for a filter could I also use a hydraulic oil filter? Thanks!

Any of those gear pumps look fine. I got mine as a used unit so it was quite cheap (from memory it was around $40 aus). I used a variable speed drill to intially test it and find out the approx rpm needed to give me plenty of pressure. Then I have used since then a 24volt gear head motor from a old Canon copier. By varying the voltage between 6 volts through to 24 volts you can get excellent control over oil pressure (if you want to) or just use a simple bypass ball valve. I would think that a hydraulic oil filter would be fine - it may be a bit of over kill! As for ebay - well you can never be sure about the condition of these things but if it's cheap enough then i would give it a shot.

A suggestion? Maybe a pump from a car power steering is usable.
Already it has a oil tank and v-belt pulley attached.
Only no filter and pressure control I think, maybe inside it there is some filter.
