Low rpm Turbine possible?

Post by grant richardson » Tue Jul 11, 2006 10:41 pm

Would it be possible to build a gas turbine capable of running at 20000 rpms max rpms?

This would cut out all of the balance problems since it wouldnt have to be dead perfect on balance.

i have a very crude idea of how this might work :D

Use high pitch model airplane props for the compressor. 2 4 blade props or 4 2 blade props. Props size like 9x9

The turbine could be made out of stainless or just use a turbocharger turbine possibly.

The turbine and compressor would be mounted on a sold shaft supported by ball bearings in a round stainless housing.

Anyone think this could work at 20K? maybe fix a low speed ram jet inbetween the compressor and the turbine like on the motor jet?

i do not really believe this is possible because... i drag race and build turbocharged systems for cars... generally... all turbo chargers require about 40000 plus rpms to make at least one pound of boost... at boost level it should self sustain!!! i use a 76 mm turbocharger which makes boost at 35000 rpms... but this large a turbo cost 1500 dollars plus!!!! not stuff you find at the junkyards..... my personal opinion... a 300 dollar turbocharger will cost you less and is balanced than what you will have to fabricate just to make a compressor and all the other add onsssss
small turbos are available and cost about 450 dollars which a 2.0 l mitsubishi engine can spool pretty easy... i am building a gas turbine right now... just finished the combuster from scrap metal with sucess http://videos.streetfire.net/video/24cc ... 8909f1.htm some turbos require even 60000 rpms just to make one pound of boost...
if you can dream it i can build it ...i build drag race cars father owns a sheetmetal shop,i work for a muffler shop ...

Hi Grant
It would be possible to build a 20K turbine, but the output would be minimal using the system you're thinking about .
It might just keep itself spinning around if you're lucky :-))
Its not the rpm , its the velocity of the blading thats important , large turbos can make good pressures even at <10,000 rpm .
Cheers
John

http://www.turboneticsinc.com/compmaps.htm
this page shows actual compressor maps and requires rpms for certail wheels..... this is information for people who wish to use turbocharger parts.... i wont arque guys ... ill just show you my turbine when its done..

Hi ??

What ......only up to a T76 ;-))

I was talking about BIG turbos , not little wimpy ones .

Thanks for the link , I've filed it for future reference :-))

Cheers
